How hard would it be to change the name of the attachments folder? (and have attachments still work of course)

That's pretty much a n0n-reason, as I'm fairly certain the name of a directory on your server has zero impact on SEO.

Can you just clarify, though, which URLs you wish to be impacted by this change of name? There may be something that can be done, but I just want to be sure we're talking about the same thing first.

For Example:
http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/attachments/image-jpeg.333055/

to

http://www.forbbodiesonly.com/moparforum/carphotos/image-jpeg.333055/

and yes, the name of the directory can help with SEO - as far as the addition of keywords.

I recall a webinar from a guy who tested this theory with a wordpress blog and picture content.

The results pretty much concluded it had zero measurable impact and the 2 key elements that had any effect were the file name and the alt tags.

That may well be true of days gone by. It's surprising the amount of old advice that sticks around as gospel. To be fair, if there is any benefit it will be negligible.

That said, it certainly doesn't hurt.

Actually this can be done pretty easily. The URLs you posted aren't folder names, they are programmatic routes within the XF software. You can therefore change them using Route Filters.

Admin CP > Route Filters > Create Route Filter:

Find Route: attachments
Replace with: carphotos

Save

That should do it
