In XF 1.4 it appears that Help is gone from the navigation, as you can see on my site (https://www.gamingforums.net)

How can I add that back in, assuming there is core functionality to do that. I know I can use an add-on or develop something myself to add it back in, but I'm just assuming there must be core functionality to add it back in, but I can't seem to find it.

    What template edit is needed?

The add-on I linked to above will apply the template edit for you. The add-on is nothing more than a template modification. The XML file also contains details of what changes need to be made where.

the downside of that addon is that it doesnt appear to add custom help pages to the dropdown.

That's true. It would require proper custom development to do that, though.

The list of custom help pages would need to be cached (if it isn't already) and then made available to the container template.

Alternatively, it would be trivial to add them by hand in the template if you don't have many.
