Getting inundated with spam

If they can't answer that, they shouldn't be on our site in the first place. Few spammers got through and XenUtiles spot that very quickly.

The problem is all my spammers were real people, not bots. I know this because I implemented a honeypot field just to see if they fill it. So right now, real spammers will register and spam you to death. That forced me to apply the above solution. So far, in a week I had zero spam. Before, I used to delete every single day few new threads and users... BTW, I implemented the login/registration block for the above listed countries also. Right now, all they can do is read the forums as guests. If they think there is a mistake, they can use the Contact form and I will add their IP as exception.

Personally, I think GeoIP should be built in XenForo by default, based on PECL extension.

I've run a vB forum for over a decade. We've done well with spam but, IMO, at the risk of limiting new members.

Currently, we:

• don't allow free email to register (yahoo, gmail and about 50 others)
• manual verification
• new members can't start threads for 7 days
• new members can't post a link for 14 days
• new members can't have a sig for 14 days

It's done a great job but I can see limiting registrations from those countries who do 95% of it being a much better way of handling it.

I'd love to make this work. Is there an add-on or anything else out there which is noob-proof?

Jeff depending on what type of hosting you're on, you can either buy/licence GeoIP yourself, or your host might have it installed. I have it installed already luckily with my shared hosting. I manually edited my registration PHP file to stick in the GeoIP code (we can help with this if you get to that stage, or if you can find a ready made plugin even better - manually editing files is not a pretty way of doing this).

Manual spammers from India are increasing lately. It seems like we have dedicated companies who hire employees just to manual spam forums and blogs for creating seo back links. Its a big industry. I even had interactions with manual spammers on my forum. They will register on forum, copy and paste a nice article from the web and post a link with proper anchor text for the site they are doing seo for.

For forums targeted to users of US, UK and rest of the world its not an issue if they ip ban India. My forum is hosted in India for Indians, imagine separating the spammers from the real users!

I have implemented sadikb's addon for preventing posting links till user reaches 50 posts. If that addon supported minimum 100 post, I would do that as well. I have also disabled signatures. Generating 50 posts to start posting links is too much of an effort for manual spammers since I believe they work on targets for their companies eg. may be 10 links an hour.

not for nothing....I am not going to install addons to stop abusive people or work 10 tomes harder so someone can try to make pennies for posting links on my site + resources. Open up cli and route away...If someone wants to see my site that bad they can figure out a way to contact me to get their IP white listed or another work around can be granted on a per user basis.

Minus a few script kiddies that are pretty much useless anyways no one would be able to or have a reason to spam links and ads if some of the mentionable issues were addressed.

Isn't that what the StopForumSpam site is about. I know that when ever I get spammers I always go to the effort of reporting them.

I suppose it will be so much better when Xenforo supports using it properly.

not really....I don't want it...to me it is unneeded and useless on my server as software...

webmasters should just not be lazy and block ips that need blocking...it is as simple as that. Be it one ip, a small range, or a geo-location. Why have the developers write code instead of having a webmaster be a master of their domain. To me it is waste and waste should always be avoided.
