Forum Runner acquired by Internet Brands

Probably just the server resources needed to route them all (at least for the normal app which supports thousands of sites). I imagine that it would be quite a lot of notices going out.

Beyond that it's pretty simple... You need an Apple Dev account with push support enabled and an SSL certificate. Apple itself does not charge for push notifications.

I would drop forumrunner in a heartbeat if you made yours https friendly... it doesn't work with https, thus I had to drop Tapatalk and use Forumrunner because it does cater https.
What do you mean? My site is entirely HTTPS and it works.
I read on tapatalk that it supports https as well.
What do i miss?

Have they changed it recently? Finally? You now got me excited Andy... :)

Because if that is the case, Forumrunner is out of there just on principle now of it being owned by IB.

Maybe we should offer "Tapatalk Mobile Suite" too with Push Notification :D
When can we expect it? lol :D
PUSH would really raise the bar. Whoever offers PUSH gets the customers.
Throw in an 'instant photo/video upload' function while you are at it.

I have beta 2.0 version Android client btw

Oooohhhhh.... this is extremely recent, thank you. I ditched it last year after switching to https because it didn't work. Asked them, requested it... it fell on deaf ears at the time because very few forums used https... yet due to hacking issues rising, more and more seem to be shifting to https to stop the problems.

Your link cited that IOS is just approved in the last weeks... I will give it a go again and see what happens...

Thanks Andy.

Count us in for now officially dropping ForumRunner support, as well.

We're still continuing to test Tapatalk, and we're really looking forward to the included mobile style coming later this year.

I find this news both surprising and not-so-surprising. Surprising in that they chose ForumRunner rather than Tapatalk. Surprising in that they wanted to actually acquire the team that does the mobile app for their gain.

It's not so surprising because, as Steven said, everyone has a price...
You really can't blame ForumRunner for their business decisions.
Everyone has a price. EVERYONE!
...However, IB gave ForumRunner an "offer they couldn't refuse."

ForumRunner is just a brand, the company that ran ForumRunner is End of Time Studios, LLC which more or less will be absorbed into vBulletin Solutions.
It is funny when comparing TapaTalk to ForumRunner most people prefer TapaTalk.
I have always liked ForumRunner better and installed both on my sites giving members a choice to what they preferred.
That just means that Tapatalk just got viral. It happens when a company acquires a well-known brand and the majority of the "other" side don't like said company. In this case, not everyone is happy about the announcement of FR being acquired by IB. This thread proves it.

The problem here is that a lot of people know Internet Brands as a company that buys brands and then drives well-known, highly regarded brands into the ground. That is an IB problem; their reputation more or less hurts them.
It obvious they want it so they can eliminate addons for competitors and have a monopoly on the fully integrated suite with mobile.
A lot of companies do this. But you knew that. ;) In other cases, they acquire to absorb the talent behind the company/brand. Others do it to gain a much, much bigger marketshare.
I would assume IB have already tried to acquire Tapatalk and offer declined though that is all speculation but I would have imagined if Tapa are the bigger company they would have been contacted by internetbrands. Thankfully I don't use either and will wait for something official to surface whether it be free or paid.
How large a company is - irrelevant. Many large companies buy out small businesses.
A stock mobile skin will serve the need for a lot of XF sites but there will always be those who prefer an actual mobile app' that offers push notifications and deeper integration (such as uploading directly from the camera). If a dedicated mobile app' doesn't offer integration, is just serving as a front-end to the content, then I would be hard pressed to see why anybody would use it instead of the stock mobile skin.
As much it would be nice to use something like Tapatalk, I just want to avoid the headaches of crashing because the of the fact that the app is a modification done by another person, rather than the person building the app. In this case, I'd rather take the official skin from xenForo devs than Tapatalk. Even though that I know a lot of people like and love Tapatalk. It's pretty popular.

I see a lot of people talking about tapatalk, and asking for support for the app on other websites than here. A lot of people come into a vB3 forum and ask for Tapatalk. So, tapatalk has a really good team... That one of these days, they'll hit the jackpot. Right now, tapatalk is at a point where they're close to that jackpot. Very close.

Anyway, the point that I was making is that I know that Tapatalk is popular, but I would choose an officially marketed, and supported mobile solution rather than something from ForumRunner or Tapatalk.

Last I heard XF had no plans on releasing a mobile app and since I (nor my members) have any use for a mobile style, I'll stick with TapaTalk. (y)

After playing with Tapatalk for Android... what do you guys like about the app versus a mobile style? So far I'm not seeing a huge benefit in using Tapatalk over what could be done in a mobile style.

And, no, I'm not trying to be argumentative.... just trying to make sure I'm not missing any benefits of Tapatalk that I might not have come across. :coffee:

Some xenForo devs mentioned a lot about the Mobile Style, and have said they plan to release it. Kier in fact said it, too.

While I typically use the full site on my phone, TapaTalk has it's advantages:
  • Easy image upload (very useful for my niche)
  • Simplified/fast browsing (it's an app)
  • However the main thing I liked was the push notifications (currently not available for the XF TT app)

If you read the announcements forum about further updates, you will read that XF are developing a mobile style as part of the core. That is not an app though. Vastly different things. A well designed mobile style that is intuitive and flexible is worth more than an app solution, because it's not limited to any OS, you just need a phone or any mobile device with a browser.

IMO, I remember VB trying to make their own app solution.... which has obviously failed like most things they touch, thus they acquired a company who is already doing it and is happy to sell their soul.

IB could never offer me enough money for anything I own... they could be as ridiculous as possible with their offer and I would still put it back in their face with a big FU.

What if they offered a really ridiculous amount of money for your forum, lets say 100,000 pounds. Money you'd never get for it "ever" from anyone else. Would you still say FU then? I just think it's easy to say it, mainly because it will probably never happen to you. But when faced with a great offer things can be very different.

I don't blame anyone for selling out, if they feel the offer on the table is just too good to be turned down.

When it comes to "a price", it really depends on why someone is doing it. If they are doing it because it's something they enjoy and not about the money then the money really doesn't matter. I get tons of unsolicited offers to buy digitalpoint.com (some into the 8-figures). But the reality is that someone could come along and offer $1,000,000,000 and they still couldn't buy it. Not because I think I'm going to make $1B from it or because I think someone will buy it for that much later. Simply because $1B won't change my life for the better... I would still live in the same place, eat the same food, drive the same car, wear the same clothes, do the same things...

What it *would* do is give me the headache of everyone in the world knowing I have $1B and also give me nothing to do and probably shorten my life from boredom.

So yeah... if someone is doing it because it's something they LIKE to do, there are cases where you can't put a monetary value on it.

How much could someone pay you to never have sex again or cut off all your limbs? I'd say it's safe to say that there *isn't* a price for everything.
