XF 1.2 Emoji Workarounds

I see that the latest version has emoji support. Since I can't upgrade anytime soon, I was wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to get emojis to work in older installs. I tried searching the Resources section, but emoji seems to be a broadly used term and I couldn't find anything specific to what I was looking for.

I have been looking at emoji scripts and emoji CSS and things like that. But still haven't figured out an elegant solution to make it user friendly.

I think there was an addon that provided emoji through smilies on 1.x. i used it before emoji support was added. but i don't think it was ever updated for newer versions.

It might leave a lot of unused smiley code if you remove it in future though. And it still would not let you post actual smilies using phone keyboards.
