If search engines can't see thread content then it can't be indexed.

So there is no possible way to leave the lock in place, but also to ensure that the posts are visible to Google.

Do you think if i put this in suggestions then the developers could explore a way to hide posts from guests without affecting SEO?

Hiding content from guests but allowing it for spiders is classified as cloaking and is something Google frowns upon.
It can result in your site being blacklisted.

This is not something which would ever be developed in the core.

    Ok thanks.

Is there a way to show the first few posts then say display a message saying you must sign up to have further access.

    Would this still affect rankings?

Sorry if these seem silly questions I'm struggling to get my head around not being able to hide content from guests without affecting google.

All i want to do is entice guests to register not bamboozle google :)
