They do make a small amount of money on domains, and earn lots on volume. They aren't the cheapest, and when you order any of the add-ons, they can get fairly costly.Indeed
A friend of mine who used to work on sales, said they try and pitch everything to you, because they make no money on domains, so have to make it up in other areas
Would explain the mess of a website and constant "Omg amazing offer just for you!" stuff when you checkout heh
According to one reference it appears that VeriSign's annual price for a .com domain, which is, I suppose, what registrars pay, is $7.85 for this year. GoDaddy charges $11.99 per year according to their current price list, but will, only occasion, knock a dollar or two off that figure. They won't lose!
