XF 1.4 Deleting User Groups 3 + 4

I've reconstructed our entire User Groups, but in process of cleaning out the old ranks I receive the following:

The following error occurred:
You may not delete important default user groups.

How do I delete these two user groups, ID 3 and 4?

As the error says, you can't. You can choose not to use them for the most part, but the first 4 groups have rough "special" meanings (specifically the first 2 do).

So it's not recommended that I delete them through our database?

Editing the database directly is never a recommended approach.
