Question about custom review subject types in DragonByte Reviews

Hi,

I've been setting up DragonByte Reviews and had a question about the available review subject types.

I noticed that the only available types are Review, Movie, TV show, Book, and Anime.

I understand that the generic Review type can be customized with additional fields, but I was surprised that there doesn't appear to be an option to create entirely new subject types.

Your product description mentions that the add-on is suitable for forums covering any niche, so being limited to four specialized types, all entertainment-related, seems a little restrictive.

I also noticed that adding more review subject types is mentioned under Future Plans. Rather than adding more predefined types, wouldn't it make more sense to allow administrators to create and configure their own?

That would give the add-on considerably more flexibility without requiring new built-in types for every possible subject.

Is there a technical limitation that prevents this, or is it something you might consider implementing?

Thanks!

Currently, there is absolutely no difference between the generic Review type and the pre-defined types, other than a more clear distinction between the custom fields.

I plan to make it easier to add review subjects by allowing data to be fetched from 3rd party APIs, f.ex. TheMovieDB for movies, etc. This functionality naturally needs actual code to implement, because each API provider’s data has to be transformed and mapped before it can be used.

Furthermore, the current review subject type system works similar to the forum type and thread type system in XenForo, which adds a huge amount of flexibility and control to other addons that may want to integrate with DB Reviews.

If there are any subject types you feel are missing, please feel free to let me know the titles and default fields you’d like, and I’ll add them :)

Thanks for the detailed explanation. That clears up quite a bit, particularly the distinction between the predefined subject types and the generic Review type.

One additional subject type I think would be useful is Software / Online Services, with default fields such as Developer, Official Website, Supported Platforms, Pricing Model, and API / Integration Support. That would cover a pretty broad range of products and services.

I’m still working through the configuration and trying to get everything set up properly.

One issue I’ve encountered is that I can create a review subject, but the Write review button doesn’t appear when viewing it while logged in. I’m looking into the category permissions now, but is there anything else in the configuration that would prevent that button from appearing?

I’d really like to get the add-on working as intended, and I appreciate your help.

Thanks again!

User group permissions (as well as per-category user group permissions) are the only things currently controlling access to writing a review.

Thanks for clarifying! I suspect I've been overcomplicating something that should have been fairly straightforward. 😄

I'll go back through the user group and category permissions and see what I've managed to overlook.

Appreciate your patience and help!

1.1.0

Update highlights

This version brings the API lookup for all four default review types; Movies and TV Shows integrate with TheMovieDB, Anime integrates with MyAnimeList and Books integrates with GoodReads/OpenLibrary.

Upon entering API keys (or enabling it, as OpenLibrary requires no API key), users who want to create new review subjects will see input fields where they can choose between a few possible IDs to use for lookup. Once the subject has been located via API...
