XF 1.5 Custom registration field that does NOT show up on a user's profile

I know about creating a custom user field for the purpose of getting a new field on the registration form. Doing that, however, always seems to create the field also on the user's profile. And if the field is marked "required" (for registration purposes), users who just want to change their profiles get caught up by having to enter something into the required field (for registration purposes).

Is there a way to add a field to the registration screen *without* requiring that it appear also on a user's profile?

The field, however, is irrelevant to the Preferences page. On my forum I have a custom field that asks registrants to provide a sample of their work. This "sample" field is irrelevant to any part of the profile. It's needed only so that I can screen people during registration.
