XF 1.2 Creating a style - best practices/tips?

Are there any threads/guides on best practices for creating a custom style?

Is there anyway to modify css directly rather than go through the ACP?

Do you have any other tips?

There's a link here that may be of benefit http://xenforo.com/community/threads/how-to-change-almost-anything-quickly-and-easily.33239/ and style properties http://xenforo.com/community/threads/style-properties-ii-a-closer-look.3690/ & http://xenforo.com/community/threads/style-properties-controlling-style-options.3091/

Though EXTRA.CSS template is good for making significant changes, more specific css changes when the options aren't included in the style properties. I'm sure the more advance stylers will pop in with their knowledge.
