has the issue of updated usernames not working as expected been resolved?
You will still find old names in certain scenarios, but those are mostly denormalized things and may not change in future releases. The vast majority of places are updated though.
I don't know how it is with XenForo, but I know that with both vB and IPB, changing your user name does not get reflected in older, quoted messages. That's probably the biggest limitation I've seen.
