XF 1.4 Changing primary group of users

In the never ending battle against spam, I have decided I want to sort new users into a different primary group than Registered. Or, failing that, sorting accounts that match the criteria of 5 approved posts and 1 day old into a separate primary group from Registered. User Promotions only alter secondary groups, not primary.

However, I've not been able to find a way to do this. Pls halp?

All users should have Registered as their Primary group. See this for details:

What you should do is set the Registered group to the criteria you want (Follow message moderation rules to Not Set (No)) and set a user group promotion for more than 5 posts to add them to a secondary user group that have Follow message moderation rules to Yes. This will achieve what you require.

The primary user group should always be the Registered user group.

Revoke many permissions for the Registered user group with Not Set (No) and then create a promotion that will promote them to a secondary user group with more permissions once they have posted X messages or something.

Man, that permission is confusing. No means approval required and yes means no approval required. :/
