In vBulletin users and admins had the possibility to exchange the media files later, if they wish. They used this quite often, eg. when they improved their image quality for some antique valuable things. So, comments, voew count eg. stayed the same, but the image was improved after. With 70k images it was never really abused.

Do we have such function in media gallery too?

It has been suggested before, but it's not a current feature.
