Category vs Forum - Changable?

Can a forum be changed into a category? Or do you have to delete the forum and start over??

What is the best way of doing that so as to not make any leftover junk anywhere?

No, they are two distinct node types.

You can just create new nodes and rearrange though, without having to start again.

Ok, really dumb question time. Why would one use a Category instead of a Forum to group threads and/or other forums? I don't get the benefit of a category over a forum.

It's purely for organisation.
