Are people "watching" Xenforo Resources ?

Do you watch every resource that you use on your site ?

There's actually two different "watches" you can place on Resources.

One on the actual resource download and one on the resource thread.

The options should be:
  • Automatically watch threads when I reply
    • With e-mail
  • Automatically watch resources when I download
    • With e-mail
Optionally you could distinguish between a Resource thread and a normal thread. So there could be a third option that pertains to threads associated with resources.

My point is the same as yours Shelley :)
I don't have that checked either. Who would ?
As Chris says ... this needs a dedicated option.

[ ] Automatically watch threads that you create or when you reply...
...[ ] and receive email notifications of replies
[ ] Automatically watch Resources you download
... be [ ] Alerted or [ ] emailed when the Resource is updated
[ ] Use the rich text editor to create and edit messages
[ ] Show people's signatures with their messages
[ ] Show your online status

Ah yeah sorry DD. Partially agree because the only option at the disposal is very very intrusive to the point the Alerts after a set time can be dismissed as useless due to them popping up every 2 seconds. It still doesn't solve the issue though, you watch a resource and every person posting within it is going to force an alert on you? Check the e-mail option i hear you say, who uses that?

Unless i'm missing what your suggesting there's still issues in my eyes with it. But hey, i don't really care because the moment intrusive anything pops up the checkbox goes to unchecked land.

I dunno DD, it's still all a little intrusive imo.

Who would ?
Most people, I thought.

I literally would make a reply and never read the thread again so I absolutely have to have automatically watch turned on. I probably wouldn't even visit my own add-on threads if I didn't watch them.

What?

You've replicated the options here...

What happens when you just click "Automatically Watch Resources you download"? Nothing? You have to say you want to be Alerted?

As per "automatically watch threads"... When you click that you get Alerts. If you then want emails as well then you click the email option.

Hit him with an alert chris. *then I can report post*

No. Watching a resource ... you get alerts when the Resource has a new version. You aren't watching the discussion thread.

See we're making progress. :) But still, even talking about it gave me an alert you can see the issues we're faced with.

Okay, fair enough this thread has become so large, bloated it's difficult to keep track what has been suggested.

i don't usually watch EVERY resource I use, but will check them periodically. The only ones I tend to watch more often, are the ones that are still being worked on at present time - needing serious updates or what-not. I don't like running/using wonky resources on live sites. If I need to find out if others need updating, I'll just go through the list in ACP, and search it on here and see if any new updates were added. Too many alerts, Yuck! Especially from their discussion threads. I'd only want alerts for actual updates.. but since that's not really an option, I generally don't watch them at all. If everyone coded them like Chris, we wouldn't need to worry about much of anything.. lol. :) ;)

It's sad but true I'm active enough here that I don't have to watch every resource I downloaded, I generally notice any changes whether it's an update/bug fix or otherwise. I'll repeat what I said to DD. Your trying to cater for "Lazy People" who can't be bothered to check on resources if that is even the case (judging by the discussion resource posts and activity within them) that doesn't seem to be the case, they are actively participating thus they'll know when and if something significant comes (could be an update, could be chris trying to report your post because I reported his) but the point is most people are aware of any updates imo. If they miss out on an update, WATCH.

Lmfao! But yeah, usually I'll just check myself if something is updated, and only watch ones I've recently had issues with/errors with, and etc. Then once it's "fixed", then I unwatch again lol. I generally keep tabs of what I use regardless, I dont need alerts shoved down my throat all the time haha.

I am curious how Xenforo.com would notify the membership about critical security update.
Considering you can't even watch the announcements forum !
I don't think there is a good way for them to "contact everyone".

The best way would be, in a future version of XenForo, a simple alert on the Admin CP homepage that can advise when a new version has been released. It's not exactly difficult to do.

IPB does that ... and it doesn't work that well.
Not everyone logs into their AdminCP daily ... or even weekly.

As well, addons can be a weak link.
Is Xenforo.com going to allow insecure addon authors to message people's AdminCP ?

No... my idea was purely in response to a solution for XenForo to alert its customers, not for add-on developers.

But XenForo currently e-mail the e-mail address you set when you by the license for any version updates. And Facebook and Twitter. This should be sufficient, if not then well, what more can they do? Phone everyone? :D

To a certain extent the responsibility ends at a certain point. XenForo and add-on developers can only do so much. If customers decide not to watch resources, check them regularly, don't update their e-mail address or other contact details and they get attacked due to a security issue then that's their dumb luck - as harsh as it sounds.

There literally isn't much more we can do.

Are the updates emailed ? /researching
Yes...
