ALWAYS Save a Site Backup To Your Computer!

Calling someone "incompetent" or "jerkoffs" because they experienced a freak accident with the hardware just goes to show you how the true "jerkoff" is.
Well, I never claimed that I wasn't a jerkoff. But I am a jerkoff who has been involved in the provider side of web hosting for longer than most people reading this have known there was such a thing as the world wide web. So I'm what you'd call an expert (me and the Mythbusters, right?).

And this expert is telling you that anyone who replaces server hardware during a DDoS (if that's really what happened, which I doubt) doesn't know their ass from their elbow. Period. End of story.

Peggy, I admire loyalty, it is a quality that is sorely lacking these days. But your host's failure was not a hardware failure, it was a brain failure, and if those same brains are at the helm of their new and improved service, I think you are making a mistake standing by them.

Well said.

So, do you have to do both or can you just drag the public_html folder to the desktop and you're good? Remember, you're talking to someone that knows nothing about the backend (SQL/Servers/etc) of the sites so I want to be sure that I don't skip any steps :)
Out of two DB backup is the most important. So if your board is active but there are very little changes on your site e.g. no php or image files changed or uploaded, you can just back up DB and attachment folders.

I always do both and put them in a folder e.g. "backup-11-21-2010". I need to somehow justify paying for high speed internet. :)

Thanks for the advice dear. I can only hope you're wrong. *crossing fingers*

So, I got the bad news today....neither my WaltDisneyBoards.com or MysteryDistrict.com data was able to be recovered :(

I have the 1-year old backup that I'm hoping to restore for WaltDisneyBoards.com, but I've lost MysteryDistrict.com altogether.

Please let this be a lesson to everyone out there. Please DO NOT put off downloading a backup to your site. This will save you so much heartbreak and will protect your investment. Take the time and do it because you don't want to leave it up to chance. :(

Sorry to hear that Arny ... invest in a backup solution when you buy your server .. start fresh .. perhaps you could turn this around in no time :)

OMG! I got the best news this morning.....

Miraculously, after hours of work throughout this morning, afternoon, and evening, we have been able to fully-restore our original equipment and as such, your data and all accounts are very much so intact and accessible. Once you are able to change your nameservers back to the original pair, you will then have full access to your websites with no data loss whatsoever.

....I literally had goosebumps this morning and nearly got emotional when thinking that about 2.5 years of my work was wiped out! So far, the nameservers have been changed and TheMysteryDistrict.com is back up while I'm waiting for WaltDisneyBoards.com to be back and ready to rock!

First goal? Get a backup of both sites and burn them to disc as well as save them to my local computer! :D

YESSSSSS!!! I got my blog back!! INTACT!

I got those same goosebumps last night Arny, when Chris emailed me to tell me that after working on those servers ALL DAY yesterday, they were able to extract the data from it, and retrieve our sites, intact! I nearly cried!

I'm on my blog right now, and gonna do a happy dance as soon as I'm finished typing!
