I think for most browsers/OSs, you can use Ctrl/Cmd when clicking on a link in order for it to open in a new tab (?)
Currently, for both Alerts and Inbox items, performing the aforementioned action will not work. It will work if you click on the content title link, but not if you click on the more significant area of the list item.
I haven't checked recently, but YouTube once had certain aspects of functionality which meant you couldn't choose to open links in a new tab.
The suggestion is for the behaviour to be altered (if it is possible, of course).
