Addonflare - Gone awol?

XF only has control over xenforo.com and their software licenses.
I think the only thing they can potentially do is to remove AddonFlare's addons from here, as they clearly do not work for XF2.3
However, they do work for XF2.2 and below which is clearly stated on the resource listings. its also clearly stated that the addons are Unmaintained. The problem is that not all customers read this and still buy these addons buy clicking on the Purchase button.

Did you report the addon or open up a support ticket?
Thanks, I will report it and contact XF.

It's nothing to do with us.
Ok, so there's the short and sweet answer. Total hand washing, really poor attitude in my opinion.

Ok, I'm slightly frustrated by loosing £100 but after 20 years in business it's not the first and won't be the last time. I'm more frustrated about trying to help it not happen to others, maybe a start up or a young person where this could make or break.

There is without doubt things that XF could do. At very least stop giving the scammers free press on your servers https://xenforo.com/community/members/addonflare.72407/.

While the transaction is certainly not XF's responsibility, it may be worth considering that there have been quite a few customers who accidentally bought xenforo addons that do not work for the latest version. Due to the way that addon discussion works (thread bolted on a resource) customers may not see the resource listing before buying. There may be some room for improvement there.

Great example. If GMC listed CompanyZ on the GMC website, then yes 100%. https://xenforo.com/community/members/addonflare.72407/
Fair enough, but you didn't buy anything from this website. You went to another site and bought from there. Furthermore, you didn't do your due diligence to make sure what you were buying was legit. Most of that member's addons were removed over a year ago. The ones that are left are all listed as unmaintained. That didn't throw a red flag for you? What about their own support forums? Did you read anything there prior to your purchase? People have been posted in their support forums about losing money with them for over a year.

Yeah I clearly didn't do enough due dil but I didn't expect to.

I would always do some quick checks if it was a new developer or addon we haven't used before. But we've paid for their addons in previous years so this was just a renewal.

As @Alpha1 said, I think there are improvements that could be made to remove the chance of this happening to other people. Of course that page xf hosts about addonflare says unmaintained and someone has also posted a warning based on their experience, but it relies on you scrolling down a bit and of course reading. Why not just remove it so you don't run that risk. There are other ways this can be missed. eg through google SERPS.

I'm clearly not the only one that has done this, so why not take an easy step from it continuing and happening to more people.

But what do I get back from Paul - Basically we don't care.
Unbelievable.

I'm not arguing against XF doing something, such as banning that member and removing the add-ons they do have left on the site. That certainly seems reasonable to me.

I simply don't agree with is your assurtion that XF has a responsibility to ensure every person on these forums only buys products from legitimate developers or that it should be their responsibility to go after those developers to help buyers get their money back.

Yes that is very reasonable and the least you can expect from a decent outfit, but clearly Xenforo Paul thinks differently.

That wasn't my assertion. I just wanted Xenforo to stop promoting a known scammer, which is what we all agreed on.

Anyway, nice to chat. Let's hope Xenforo do the right thing rather than only contributing "It's nothing to do with us."

Why is that left to me to do and not Xenforo?
I still think Xenforo could take an extra step and file a complaint with the hosting service that operates these sort of sites. It would be a lot easier coming from them. However, considering Xenforo's input into this thread and now knowing their attitude, they are never going to do this.

They could take their XF licence off them too https://www.addonflare.com/forums/
I still think they could do this.

So at the very least, they could stop promoting the scammers on this very website we all use. That would be nice.

I'd say "scammer" is (maybe) not the right word here. If the issue is XenForo 2.3 compatibility, the addon listing on this site clearly states it's not compatible with 2.3 and that it's not maintained. The website you buy it from says the most recent version it works with is XenForo 2.2.8.

If it's an actual scam, that's one thing. But you receiving exactly what what advertised (an unmaintained addon that doesn't work with 2.3) is not that.

Not agreeing with them not updating it... I just don't think "scam" is the right word here.

False. A company can legally use another company's name in a descriptive way when you are selling services for that company's products, with or without their approval.

There are two types of law, internationally recognized, which cover this: first sale doctrine (for reselling a used product, "Tony's Used Fords") and fair use ("this air filter fits Fiat 500 1.3 diesel engines" or "this vacuum flows 50% more air than a Hoover T21").

I think you've missed the point here.

Ok but not sure it makes much difference. I counted about 6 people commenting that they have lost their money and that's just the ones that have noticed and the ones that vocalised it. So we can assume it's considerably more.

Addonflare still has an a live website, working email and Paypal account. There are very few innocent explanations for that, especially considering this has been going on for over a year now...

Dude!! What part of "It ain't gonna happen!" do you not understand?! Good lord man, give it a rest!!

Right, I understand that. I'm just saying it's out of date software (which they clearly state both here and on their website), but not a scam.

You want XenForo (the company) to take punitive action against a user for selling exactly what they advertise (an addon that is unmaintained and only works up through XenForo 2.2.8), even though they aren't a party to the actual transaction and have no way to get your money returned to you?

For sake of argument, let's say a site sells software for Windows 10, clearly states that it's only for Windows 10 and that there will be no further updates (it's unmaintained). Would you say buyers were scammed if it's not updated to Windows 11?

Again... not agreeing with it not being updated, but I don't see the scam that you claim is happening.

Ok you’re going round in a circle here. We went through all these points in the thread.

We’ll end it here and in the hope xenforo do what we agreed we think they should.

See ya 👋
