195$ is a brazen, overpriced pricepoint for xenforo

Not a good look. It's obvious the team is trying to get all the sheeple to line up for the cloud hosting cool aid.
What???? The starter cloud is $648 paid annually... and that is just starter, let alone a decent sized forum.

Starter forum - Xenforo $195
Starter hosting - Linode 2GB $144 - 4GB $288

Under $400 to start, with only the hosting cost ongoing, as there is no need to constantly upgrade just because a new version arrives, is pretty damn good for the software you're buying. Add cloudflare, totally free, you just got all the DNS security and free SSL needed.

Much cheaper than cloud. You can run a million post forum on Linode shared 4GB plan, no issues what so ever. Its only when you start using elastic search and such that you need more RAM, so that would increase your cost to $576 for 8GB or such.

Now... all in context. My small forum at only 1.8 million posts, based on page view limitations on the cloud plans, by the pricing page, would require the cloud business plan, $2,700 annually.

WTF dude? How is $195 + your hosting not cheap compared to the cloud services you are claiming they're pushing anyone towards?

Same reason this argument is always a false equivalence: there is value being paid for in terms of management.

Can I manage a VPS? Sure. But plenty of other people I know would struggle to do so and they are happy to trade their money for not having to learn. Plus they have someone they can beat with a stick when things go sideways - never underestimate the value of being able to get that help on tap rather than be left with fixing it yourself or trying to find someone to fix it for you if you don’t have the skills.

In essence the distance in monetary terms is made up by your time. How much do you value your time at?

We are, of course, going to slowly keep pushing up the cost of self-hosted license so you have no choice but to surrender tens of thousands of dollars per year on renewals.

At the current rate of price increase we should get there sometime before 2077.
Please don’t take lessons from Invision, they’re a little too good at that.

(I am of course joking.)

IF: all addons can be downloaded via Admin Panel, updating addon as well, this option is coming to XF 2.4,
This could eliminate thieves selling them on their websites, giving addons for free.
Who has not active license extension, can not update addons.
Want to keep your forum updated? Keep your license extension active!
License expired? turn off addons update option.

for now to buy addons go to developer website, buy addon & get activation code, go back to XF addon to activate that code to install addon.

not need to price up & worry about the rest!

I thought I read that as only possible for free hosted addons on the resources. Any paid addons that you have to acquire through the developer's site, you have to do it manually.

Give me the proof.
The proof is that Invision Classic - the self-hosted suite - is $499 to purchase with a $199 renewal. Apparently the concept of a company charging what they think a product is worth, reflective of their time and costs to develop and maintain it, is now "a war crime".

Refer to this comment https://xenforo.com/community/goto/post?id=1720172, I conclude XenForo is more expensive in the end.
Mostly depends on what functionality you'd actually use in XF and what paid addons you'll use to implement the things you don't have in the box.

Also worth noting that XF doesn't take away the licence if you let it lapse long enough, while Invision can if you don't renew for 2 years.

The overall cost equation is very different depending on exactly what you will use or not use and whether you play to stay updated all the time.

Get with the times people. Nothing is cheap anymore. But XF is the Cadillac of bundles, especially on the cloud imho.

We all here do not understand them! even if you give them license for $1, but hah! They still debate & talk.
Who spends 2 hundreds for one time visit to restaurant!
Did Steve Jobs said Stay well fed, Stay clever?

not really.
when i look at it from a buyer i see a forum for $195 from xenforo.
when i look at it as a buyer i see a forum a blog groups and what looks like a calendar for $179.
for somebody that does not keep up with the gossip and only pays attention to cost it appears a better offering.
not every one has spent years in this pursuit.
people tend to look at the cost and go with what is cheaper even if later they have to change.

You can dance about trying to explain away why you're not a troll... but in the end, you're still a troll. You certainly aren't here to contribute anything positive to the community. I suggest a job as a movie critic instead of a bitter person tilting at windmills.
