As with XenForo 2, users with active support and upgrades will be able to download XenForo 3 at no extra cost.

As they're still in HYS for 2.4 I doubt we're seeing 3 this year or early next year.Personally I'm hyped for Xenforo 3 which they are already talking about along the grapevine even though nothing has been official. Even if it releases early next year instead of this year it will be well worth it and super excited.
Now you're just being silly. Subscription for self-hosted would kill XF. I would shift near immediately if any forum platform did that.IMO, Xenforo is far too cheap. I'm surprised they haven't gone for a full subscription model for self hosted yet. Has to be worth at least 25 quid a month.

Not at all, plenty of software houses jump on the subs wagon as it's easy cash, But not all of them. Monthly predictable income helps companies plan, hire, and build better products, faster. I think that's worth paying for.
That's what have said. First I thought about Woltlab, too.... BUT..... I'm happy for my decicion to XenForo till today! It just fits!As someone who uses Woltlab, I wish I had switched to xenforo earlier.
I made the purchase yesterday and completed the transfer of my licences today.
You pay extra for the slightest customisation in Woltlab.
I'll tell you what;
I was pushed to pay 20 euros again for the upgrade theme licence I paid 20 euros for Woltlab 6.0 when woltlab 6.1 came out
However, there is an intermediate version change between 6.0 and 6.1, why do they charge extra? Of course, it was the person who made the theme, not woltlab.
When I was using Woltlab, my cost was higher per year. Plus it's not as extensive as the xenforo library, but it was a good software.
It was a relief when I forgot the other software and switched to xenforo. I want to hide links to visitors and there is no plugin! I can download it here for free with all variations.
But then there would be a risk that users would turn away from this business model and the XenForo software.
25 quid is currently C$45 (roughly). That's C$540 per year for software plus hosting. Unsustainable for my site. I might as well go XF Cloud at that point, which I have not done precisely because of the cost. More likely, I freeze on the last version that is perpetual licensing, since they would not be able to make this retro. It would have to be 3.0 and forward or something like that. No more income from me, period. And I save the annual enhancement fee.Has to be worth at least 25 quid a month.

Or they could, you know, not be greedy. Stick to a one-time cost perpetual license with annual maintenance and make sure the price of both adequately covers their costs. I have been paying for business software that way for decades and it has worked well. Admittedly, 30% of list for enhancement fees is high ($60 per year on a $195 list), but is inline with premium maintenance packages on corporate software.But I would like to read the outcry here if there were a clear distinction between hobby and business when it comes to pricing!
That's exactly what Internet Brands did when they launched vBulletin 4.0 which is probably why certain areas, like 'groups' are still sitting there waiting to be finished. It's the income from annual licence extensions that help provide a more regular income for the developers and an incentive to keep developing.Stick to a one-time cost perpetual license with annual maintenance and make sure the price of both adequately covers their costs.
