195$ is a brazen, overpriced pricepoint for xenforo

A little late to the thread but I don't think it's overpriced at all. The fact that it comes with a year of updates but your not set back by some wack subscription model but have a version you can keep and never pay a cent again if you didn't want to and then after it's only $60 where your paying for updates is a super professional pricing model and standpoint xenforo has adopted.

I just renewed my updates and upgraded to 2.3.4

Personally I'm hyped for Xenforo 3 which they are already talking about along the grapevine even though nothing has been official. Even if it releases early next year instead of this year it will be well worth it and super excited.

@Chris D I have but one question real fast. Is it going to cost extra even if you are current on the updates payment? Just wondering. If so I understand but would be nice if it came with the updates were already paying. Either way I support you guys and thank you so much for all you do. I've been tinkering with jetbrains ai assistant and am just bombshell amazed at how far technology has come.

As with XenForo 2, users with active support and upgrades will be able to download XenForo 3 at no extra cost.

Thank you for the reply. I can see how this business is going to grow substantially just because of such a realistic marketing plan. Thanks again and glad I updated. Should be looking forward to it whenever it does release which I'm assuming sometime next year but will be super excited.

I have only had the license for about 9 months. The price of the package is reasonable in my opinion.
Of course I also needed a little training time. But the bottom line is... good value for money and, above all,
the software is constantly being developed! So it's okay if I pay for it!
The death is free, it only costs life!
Anyway, I don't regret buying this software license!

As they're still in HYS for 2.4 I doubt we're seeing 3 this year or early next year.

It's always a balancing act for a programmer and the threshold between cheap and expensive is always fluid.
I think that XenForo is balanced in terms of price and needs to stay that way. Everyone has the opportunity to "pimp"
their package individually. And if I take my forum, just as an example, then it's easily 700 euros + that I've invested so
far in the basic program plus all three expansions, plus my add-ons. And the monthly price for the hosted server.

Alltogether and for a hobby forum, which is absolutely free for the users..... a well-rounded affair for the admin.
My personal opinion!

Not at all, plenty of software houses jump on the subs wagon as it's easy cash, But not all of them. Monthly predictable income helps companies plan, hire, and build better products, faster. I think that's worth paying for.

But then there would be a risk that users would turn away from this business model and the XenForo software. That's why I think the solution of buying support for a year is more ideal. As long as there are similar ?? Software like XenForo exists, it's thin ice!!!

As someone who uses Woltlab, I wish I had switched to xenforo earlier.

I made the purchase yesterday and completed the transfer of my licences today.
You pay extra for the slightest customisation in Woltlab.

I'll tell you what;

I was pushed to pay 20 euros again for the upgrade theme licence I paid 20 euros for Woltlab 6.0 when woltlab 6.1 came out :D

However, there is an intermediate version change between 6.0 and 6.1, why do they charge extra? Of course, it was the person who made the theme, not woltlab.

When I was using Woltlab, my cost was higher per year. Plus it's not as extensive as the xenforo library, but it was a good software.

It was a relief when I forgot the other software and switched to xenforo. I want to hide links to visitors and there is no plugin! I can download it here for free with all variations.

That's what have said. First I thought about Woltlab, too.... BUT..... I'm happy for my decicion to XenForo till today! It just fits!

Has to be worth at least 25 quid a month.
25 quid is currently C$45 (roughly). That's C$540 per year for software plus hosting. Unsustainable for my site. I might as well go XF Cloud at that point, which I have not done precisely because of the cost. More likely, I freeze on the last version that is perpetual licensing, since they would not be able to make this retro. It would have to be 3.0 and forward or something like that. No more income from me, period. And I save the annual enhancement fee.

Absolutely right Mendalla!

For a hobby forum it's the death! And I dare say that many or a lot people here run a hobby forum! 😇😎
Without any income!

But I would like to read the outcry here if there were a clear distinction between hobby and business when it comes to pricing!🙃

Or they could, you know, not be greedy. Stick to a one-time cost perpetual license with annual maintenance and make sure the price of both adequately covers their costs. I have been paying for business software that way for decades and it has worked well. Admittedly, 30% of list for enhancement fees is high ($60 per year on a $195 list), but is inline with premium maintenance packages on corporate software.

From the perspective of this old IT hand, the shift to SaaS and paying even for self-hosted software as a sub has not been driven by innovation or by companies desperate for money, but by companies seeking to bloat their profit margins to keep shareholders happy. My ERP system is still license + maintenance and was bought almost 25 years ago but within the next 2-3 years, we will be migrating to a SaaS system and our costs for ERP will go insane.

That's exactly what Internet Brands did when they launched vBulletin 4.0 which is probably why certain areas, like 'groups' are still sitting there waiting to be finished. It's the income from annual licence extensions that help provide a more regular income for the developers and an incentive to keep developing.
