This template modification displays the sub-forums below the parent node body.

First step: Ensure the style property nodeListSubDisplay is set to "Listed below node", you can find this in Style properties > Node/forum list

Perfect!

I upgraded one forum from XF 1.5x and it retained the subforum displays.

I didn't even know this was an issue until I migrated another forum to 2.0.10 and could not figure out how to get it to display the subforums.

This is exactly what I was looking for. :) It's a surprise that it's not included in the default styling, but perhaps it only becomes an issue when you have a lot of subforums, as I do. :)
