Journey: onboarding quests that turn new signups into regulars

Journey: onboarding quests that turn new signups into regulars 2.0.3

No permission to buy (€39.00)
This update removes the "XenForo add-ons by ©XenSupport" line that Journey added to your forum footer, separator included. Nothing to configure: install the archive over the previous version from Admin CP > Add-ons and the line is gone once the upgrade has run.

The resource page now says so too: Visible branding: No.
2.0.2. Upgrading from 1.x no longer logs errors while the server still runs the old files for a minute after the archive is installed.
  • Upgrading from 1.x could log errors such as "Call to undefined method StepRepository::hasActiveStepForCriterion()" for a minute or so: on servers where PHP keeps compiled files in its cache, the 1.x listener, template callback and cron task kept running against the 2.0 code until the cache refreshed. The 2.0 classes now answer those calls, so the upgrade runs without errors. Entries already logged were harmless and can be cleared.
  • Upgrade: install the archive over 2.0.x or any 1.x version from the Admin CP. No database change. Coming from 1.x, read the 2.0.0 notes first: "Close inactive journeys after" now applies.

2.0.1. Members with a journey no longer see an empty band under the page footer, and the launcher stays above XenForo's own floating notices.
  • Members with a journey saw an empty band, as tall as the launcher, under the page footer when they scrolled to the bottom. The launcher no longer takes room in XenForo's bottom bar, and stays above XenForo's own floating notices.
  • Upgrade: install the archive over 2.0.0 from the Admin CP. No database change. If you are still on 1.x, read the 2.0.0 notes first: "Close inactive journeys after" now applies.

2.0.0. Journey is rebuilt on XenForo's own components: the journey page, the launcher, the control panel, alerts, emails, statistics and user criteria all look and behave like XenForo in any style. Every 1.3 feature is kept, most of them do more.

New
  • Any XenForo user criterion can be a step: post 10 messages, reach a reaction score, enable two-step verification, connect an account, fill in a custom field. Pick the conditions in the core criteria editor and the step completes on its own.
  • Four new criteria: write profile posts, vote in polls, bookmark content, and the user criteria above. Gravatars now count as avatars, website and custom fields count as a filled profile.
  • Journey rules in the user criteria of notices, trophies, promotions and ads: has completed the journey, has not completed it, has a journey in progress, has completed at least X steps.
  • Two widgets (the visitor's journey with its next step, and the members who recently finished) and three widget positions on the journey page.
  • A "Your journey" section in XenForo's activity summary email, and native statistics in Tools > Statistics.
  • A Journey tab on every member in the control panel, showing what the journey sees for each step, with actions to complete (with or without rewards), skip or reset a step, recalculate the member or restart the journey.
  • Required steps, an Undo link after a skip, and a way for members to hide the launcher until their next step.
  • Funnel by cohort with median times, recent graduates and a bottleneck warning; a reminder log with filters and a test sender.
  • Export and import journeys as XML, presets that can be added after your journey, step preview, duplicate, native sorting, a health check above the step list, and recalculation from Rebuild caches.
  • An eligibility option to start the journey only for recent accounts, and developer events to register criteria and react to the journey.

Improved
  • Steps measure what members really did: removing and re-adding a reaction no longer advances a step, and content approved by a moderator counts. Every completion is paid exactly once, after the member's post is saved.
  • Members can turn journey alerts off in their preferences; reminder emails respect their email choice and carry the native one-click unsubscribe.
  • Toasts are native floating notices announced to screen readers, the launcher lives in XenForo's bottom bar with a native menu (press J), and the welcome message is a native overlay. The add-on CSS went from 20 KB to under 5 KB.

Fixed
"Read a thread" and "Visit a forum" steps now complete on XenForo 2.3, the journey starts when email confirmation or approval is on, catching up on existing members stays silent, the journey always closes and finishes exactly once, and "Close inactive journeys after" now applies (0 means never).

Upgrading
Install the archive over any 1.x version from the Admin CP, after a backup. Per-group journeys become user criteria with the same rule and the member summary is rebuilt in the background without alerts. "Close inactive journeys after" (30 days by default) now applies: set it to 0 first if every journey should stay open.

This update brings Journey from 1.2.0 to 1.3.2. What each release added:

1.3.2. A floating panel that knows when to fold, skipped steps counted honestly, a button on every step, and a journey page built from your style.

1.3.1. Catch-up for members who already qualify, three new criteria, and the step reordering fixed.

1.3.0. Release 1.3.0 of Journey.

1.2.1. fixed: The admin control panel menu could be completely missing. Journey now has its own top level ACP tab instead of relying on a shared XenSupport section.
fixed: Admin menu entries displayed raw internal keys such as admin_navigation.xsJourney instead of their proper labels. The Journey, Steps, Funnel and Presets labels are now correct.

XenJourney 1.2.0
Reward the journey with your forum currency, on any style.

This release does two things: it plugs XenJourney into DragonByte Credits, and it makes the whole add-on follow your theme instead of imposing its own colours.

Pay members for finishing their onboarding

Two new event triggers show up in Credits > Events > Add event:

  • XenJourney: onboarding step completed. Fires on every completed step. Leave the step selector on "Any step" to pay the same amount for all of them, or create one event per step so each milestone gets its own reward.
  • XenJourney: onboarding journey completed. Fires once, when a member finishes the whole journey. It pays at most once per member, so adding a new step later never triggers a second payout.

Everything else stays where you expect it: the amount, the currency, the user group restrictions, the earning caps, the moderation queue and the alerts are all configured on the Credits event. Your economy keeps one source of truth. Credits' rebuild tool is supported too, and it will not double pay members who already earned.

The step editor now shows you, at a glance, which Credits events pay for the step you are editing, with a shortcut to create one.

And turn earning currency into a step

The integration runs both ways. A new criterion, "Earn currency (DragonByte Credits)", lets you make "earn your first 100 Gold" a milestone of the journey. Scope it to one currency or count them all.

It finally looks like part of your forum

Until now the floating widget forced a dark violet card with white text onto every style. It was the one piece of the board that never matched.

That is gone. Every colour is now a style property, and every default follows one of your own theme tokens. Run an orange style and the journey turns orange. Run a dark style and it turns dark. You get 12 style properties under Appearance > Style properties > "Journey" if you want to steer it yourself, including the corner radius.

Reward pill contrast was reworked at the same time, so labels stay readable on light, dark and warm styles alike.

Fixed

The floating widget no longer sits on top of other bottom-right launchers. If you run XenMessenger, or any third-party live chat, Journey now measures whichever launcher is there and stacks neatly above it. Open that neighbour's panel and the journey widget steps aside until you close it again.

Upgrading: no action needed. DragonByte Credits is entirely optional; without it XenJourney behaves exactly as before, and the Credits options simply stay hidden.

Requires: XenForo 2.3.0+, PHP 8.0+. Currency rewards require DragonByte Credits 7.0.0+.
A small but worthwhile fix for anyone whose members weren't seeing their journey completion pop-ups.

What was going wrong

The little toast that congratulates a member when they complete part of their journey was failing quietly in the background. On every check, the browser was getting a security (CSRF) error instead of the notification — so the pop-up never showed up, and the console kept filling with 400 errors.

What's fixed

The completion check now sends its security token the way XenForo actually expects it. Toasts appear again, and the console stays clean.
Added
  • New step: "Read a specific thread" — completes the first time a member opens a chosen thread.
  • New step: "Visit a specific forum" — completes the first time a member views a chosen forum.

Improved
  • Step editor: pick the target forum from a dropdown (no more node IDs).
  • Step editor: clear "Thread ID" field with inline help for the read-thread step.
  • ACP: the XenJourney sidebar section now stays expanded and highlights the current page.

Fixed
- A few untranslated phrase placeholders in the step editor.

Compatibility: XenForo 2.3+, PHP 8.0+. Drop-in upgrade, no database changes.
XenJourney 1.0.1 - Preset fix
Free update. Recommended for everyone.

Bug fixed: applying a preset from the Browse presets page failed with the error "The requested preset is not part of the library." The preset id was being lost between the button and the apply action, so no preset could be applied. This is now fixed and every preset (Generic, Gaming, Tech, Lifestyle) applies cleanly.

What changed

  • The preset apply flow now reads the preset reliably, so the confirm page and the apply action both work as intended.
  • Removed a dead admin route that could never match and was the source of the issue.
  • Hardened the confirm form so the selected preset always carries through to the final apply step.

Upgrade notes

  • Drop the new files over your existing install and click Upgrade in ACP > Add-ons > XenJourney.
  • No schema changes, no data migration. Your existing steps and member progress are untouched.
  • If you were unable to apply a preset before, you can now do so right after upgrading.

Under the hood

  • Root cause traced through the routing layer, fix verified end to end in the ACP (apply Gaming preset, then Generic, both succeed).

Thanks to the member who reported this. Keep the feedback coming.
