I have a lot of patience. When I converted my site over from vBulletin 4 I waited for months for a vBulletin Blogs Importer. I ended up posting everyone's blog from scratch as an LN Blog by logging on as my members for the entries and comments and adjusting the dates in the database.

Vanity URLs and RSS is why I switched over from LN Blogs to Better Blogs which I paid $40 for and $100 for vanity urls. My vanity urls no longer work because I changed servers and Rigel will not help nor does he seem interested in updating his addon with the main feature my members have been complaining about for months (no recent blogs sidebar). The only recent blogs sidebar is one that comes with BD Widget. He promised a XenPorta sidebar last year. It would've been easier waiting for it if his blogs had a global RSS feature like XI Blogs currently does cause then I could've just put our latest blogs as a RSS widget.

Blah blah blah, what we really need is a latest blogs sidebar. I don't press the issue because I lack patience, I ask for my members who are pressing the issue. This is me with my admin cap on and customer cap on. I hated having to give Rigel one star for Better Blogs. I don't like coming in your thread looking 'impatient'. I just know that it takes a long time for any of you to do anything which is why I asked Mouth if he wanted to do a paid request.

LN Blogs -> XI Blogs v1 didn't require an importer. It took 1 beta for an importer to appear for LN Blogs / XI Blogs v1.0 to XI Blogs v1.1.

2) Yes, only admin-defined at this moment, but a planned overall of the category system is well, planned.

That's great. I really hope that the overhaul will allow admins to choose to use mandatory admin created categories only.

I know that most blogs have user defined categories. But that simply does not make sense for communities that have category / node based setups for the rest of the site. Forums, groups, articles, gallery, whatever; its all setup on a node/category basis and permissions also work based on that. Its quite strange to do this differently for blogs.

There is quite a lot of benefit to use a node / category based permissions setting. For example: this allows you to pull content from one blog category and display this content in a forum about the same topic. So a forum about Lizards, could get a sidebar with blogs about Lizards.

I believe they are all admin defined at this time. It doesn't have a setting for required (possibly has one for required) / default category tho.

One thing that has always annoyed me in vbulletin blog is that there is no unlimited child categories.
By way of comparison: I have 450 forums, which go many levels deep and I would like to mirror this in blog categories.

Another benefit for having admin defined categories is that members interested in a specific area will be able to find interesting content in the blog.
Imagine a website with 1000 blogs. Some blogs are tagged by users with exotic categories and most are not. So how are you going to find those blogs that interest you?
Having a member based overview does not really help you.
User invented categories are not much help either.

Like mentioned above, I'd like to interconnect content based on category / node. For example by displaying content in the RM. A 'blog' tab in the RM would force me to buy this addon within a few milliseconds.

IIRC, blog categories can go as deep as you want, however, it doesn't display them
too well. I'd have to test tomorrow on my computer.

It doesn't beyond basic parent/child relationship at the moment.
Psst. You really need to play with the blog more closely. :p
 
I have replied there.

One thing that I would also like to see is a secondary but very popular use for blogs: Newsblog.
I would like to use the blog to provide a news page, with blog roll, similar to www.techcrunch.com
Basically this means having a category with a newblog layout, that only selected usergroups can submit to. News blogs need to be approved before publication.

Is this something you would like to offer?
