What is upper layer, lower layer?

I am not seeing where you chose the icon color. Where did you find that?

Also why would one icon display correctly, but another display too big? Both are set for the same 36px.

Font Awesome allows to construct an icon from two icons using upper layer and lower layer.
You can consider lower layer to be kinda like the background and higher layer the foreground.

On the same page, you should have a color picker.

It's explained on the nodes edit page, for icons constructed of two layers you have to set the pixel size to half the size.

There is no off or reset once something is selected.

For both issues, I can infer from the screenshot that you didn't upload the js files to your server.

This is impossible to have such an error in that file.
Did you get it once ? If so might have been generated during your upgrade.

It's not really impossible is it, because I got that error when upgrading your add-on.
