That is already tentatively planned for 3.0 afaik; I think there was mention of Chris working on something a few months ago, but I could be misremembering.

From what I understand, 3.0 is mostly just 2.3 with a new style. Also, from my understanding, the style should be finished, or at least nearly finished by now. They started to put it in 2.3, then decided against it and had to remove all the style changes from 2.3 and add them into 3.0 instead.

That said, it's also been said that they're adding a new editor in 3.0, and it's unclear as to how much more work is needed to be done there to get that ready.

So to answer your question, I'm sure the answer is the same as always, which is there is no timeline for XF3.

I wouldn't expect it to be too terribly far away, though, and we should also be expecting to get smaller, and more frequent updates, following that 3.0 release, so that's something to really look forward to.

Following @Chris D's comments yesterday, I'd like to briefly explain some of what's been going on.

Along with a bunch of major performance improvements and new features that are on the slate for 2.3, one of the main things on our list to do was a totally new master style. This has been largely my domain, and I have to say I'm really looking forward to unveiling it.

However, as the design was finalised and the technology behind it was being integrated, we turned our attention to how to migrate existing styles over to the new system in as much as would be possible. It was at this...

3.0 is supposed to be released soon after @Chris D is ready to do so. He has @Kier working on 3.0

Indeed. But 2.3 isn't even stable yet so I wouldn't expect 3.0 until back end of the year.. In my opinion. No point releasing 2.3 then throwing 3.0 out a month later.

Fairly sure the big change in 3.0 is the change of editor which is huge. Can’t imagine 3.0 will be a month or three after 2.3.

Why not? Jeremy's been at it for over a year now, and I believe style authors have already been given some insight into 3.0 and maybe even have seen examples/demo of it.

Just to put a stop to any rumours (I've seen another post about this where someone claimed a select group were being given previews), no-one outside staff has seen 3.0, other than what has been posted on this forum.

Because 2.3 isn’t even out yet and 3.0 is going to need plenty of shakedown when it does arrive. A revamped theme plus a new editor is enough to prompt a lot of bug finding.

They've said 3.0 style had been largely already developed, and would continue somewhat in parallel. It's my believe, from staff posts, that the new editor integration into 3.0 is well underway too. It's not inconceivable that 3.0 goes into RC releases almost straight after 2.3 production release, and given the XF push on quicker release cycles and single major features, that 3.0 reaches production release quite quickly.

Same old discussion, different day.

I'm looking forward to 2.3 and also have 3rd party developers update their add-on's, so we can all upgrade without worrying. I've been impatient myself, but I've seen some great progress lately which makes me satisfied.
