Ok. First I'd like to say:

VERY excited to see this. We (and quite a few of our peers who make a living from running forums) have been openly debating and evaluating options since IB came publicly into the picture.

Now that that's out of the way I'd like to kick off the discussion of what professional forum administrators/owners would like to see:

Here's some of mine:

#1 Server optimization and scalability. Seriously. People that make a living from their sites have no qualms shelling out cash for a better product, but the hardware requirements are a BIG issue when you're talking about ongoing expenses.
#2 Image and video gallery that is actually INTEGRATED with the forums. ALL images and video that has been uploaded should categorizable, searchable and should be EASILY organized and reused by the member. Take a look at http://www.plupload.com/ for an upload system that resizes the image ON THE WORKSTATION. This is huge, as most people don't have a clue how to resize an image and get frustrated when their 5 MB image takes forever to upload.
#3 Obviously there should be an easy migration path from existing vB systems. From our particular perspective we need a way to migrate stuff that is using customized GARS templates. There also needs to be some capability to port over other existing content from galleries like Photoplog, Photopost etc. and ::shudder:: vBlog.
#4 SEO. A large percentage of existing money making vB sites use VBSEO. There needs to be some provision for either replicating VBSEO urls or providing automated redirects, or it will be financial (SERP) suicide for a site to migrate.

Developer community fostering and support is KEY. I think there is a major opportunity here for xenforo to coopt a lot of the vB dev community, but in order for that to work, there needs to be a CLEARLY outlined standard for how things will work going forward. IB burned a lot of folks, and they will want to know that they have a future with Xenforo.

'K.

I'm sure there's tons more to talk about, but that's it for me for now. Really psyched to see a possible way forward as we have been really REALLY concerned about IB and the huge conflict of interest in having a company that is essentially a competitor in the forum space developing the software that runs our site (we have had ZERO intention of ever upgrading to 4.x at this point). We've been STRONGLY inclined to stop at 3.8.X and go to custom development at that point, having an option is hugely attractive. :)

I am not a coder; but there are few things I would like to see implemented as XenForo is in its early stages. The core should be a User Management System (UMS) with user profile pages being a center piece [it's not a separate product, but a core]. Forum should be just an add-on, an important add-on, second in line, so to say. There should be a full-fledged media addon: galery, video, music [think phpmotion]. Customer's should be able to buy any combination of add-ons.

And also please start working on language packs on a serious base. Maybe Floris can help with that.

Darn, was going to start my own!!!

This is just a list of things I'd like to see. Maybe its in the works already.

- Spoiler BB Code
- Smilie Catagories
- Gallery of the Avatars and Signature images I uploaded for selection.
- Ajax display of new replies posted while a user is viewing that thread
- Networking multiple sites together like vbfans (sharing on an icb of forums, shared users, shared 'content')

I'll add more as they come to mind.

If not that, at least a notification that there's new posts as you were reading the thread as you're replying. When you click "Post Reply," it would put up a notification letting you know and ask if you want to post anyway, or load the posts and then allow you a chance to read before finally adding your comment should you want to make changes.

This I would love to see as a core function from Day 1. A lot of other things (eg: GUI stuff, BB codes, etc.) can be added as project progresses but being able to have a single-sign-on system within my own sites would be tempting enough to be a very early adopter.

Zoints had has this idea but sadly couldn't make it spread over the forum world ;)

WIKI !! a real deal article database with "add to wiki" on users posts

NO BLOGS EVER thats why we have a forum !!!

Instant Messaging !! ive tried Comet Chat and Arrow Chat both softwares had the features i wanted but were poorly executed , dont really need a PM system just an instant messager

Add a little bit of functionality like stack overflow:
  • Up/down voting on individual posts
  • A thread display mode that orders posts by up/down votes (that could be enabled by default for individual forums by the Admin)
  • Use up/down voting for a new user badge/reward (and karma/rep)
  • A per-forum setting to allow the OP to choose one "best answer" out of all replies
The above would not be for all forums, only for certain specialised "Question & Answer" forums within your site.

If the plugin integration exists and is as nice as I'm hoping it is, I'd like to go perhaps slightly against the grain and suggest that keeping it as lightweight as possible would be great - lean and mean is definitely the way forward. Surely a lot of what's been suggested before is the sort of thing that could be done as a plugin?

However, definitely +1 for the networked forums and SEO… :p

Centralized User Registration Core - Multiple xenForo installations, common login

Quick Edit ?

WordPress Support? :D

What they should implement ASAP is a migration script. If you want to get those vB, IPB, myBB, etc. users to switch you have to make it easy for them to do so.

Just a note that threads like these are a nightmare for us to read and absorb - we will create a system soon to collect your suggestions, but for now please be aware that this thread is not the ideal vehicle, so you might want to limit your posting in it.
