Windows 8 (plan B) Return of the Desktop & StartBar

I've been using Windows 8 since the publicly released betas and I not hampered by the Start screen in any way. If anything, I prefer it to the Start menu of Windows 7. But then again, I never used either much in the first place. I hit the Windows key, type what I want, press Enter and then I'm done with it.

Metro...the beginning of the "scroll right". For years we've been taught to scroll up or scroll down. Now Microsoft has us scrolling left and right instead. Go figure.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they charged for it, I mean, they were selling windows 8 VERY cheaply compared to previous editions

I think I paid £25? for the professional version

Although, I am back on Windows 7, I just couldn't stand the stupid metro/UI crap they bundled/integrated with it, even with third party apps removing most of it, it was still a pain.

I would take a guess that if even 50% of windows users are not happy with win8 and the metro direction it's gone in then Microsoft will surely look at doing something since a large portion of their userbase being unhappy with the latest OS can't be sitting well with them.

Don't get me wrong, I like side scrolling, on my tablet.

I'm sure they will. I just find the things that people have issues with in Windows 8... non-issues for me. But everyone is different.

I guess I just feel if you want Windows 8 to function like older versions of Windows, stick with the older versions. XP still has another year of support, Win7 has another three years or so.

Christ, I don't think i could ever go back to Xp (good OS when I used it up till a year ago) but win7 is the OS I'll stick with. I'm very happy with it.

3 years left that microsoft will support win7, is that officially confirmed?

It feels like Microsoft loves punishing their customers.

Windows 8's sale ended in early 2013 and they plan on releasing Windows Blue by the end of 2013. It's been less than a year and already they're pushing out a new OS. And it's basically going to re-add everything they took out.

Add in the fact that I'm tired of having to call Microsoft to validate and prove that I'm a customer or add in the fact that I had to install, sometimes purchase other products to replace the things Microsoft took out.....

.... And I honestly can't say I'm going to take this one lying down. I honestly feel Windows Blue is "deserved" and "earned" to those of us who purchased Windows 8.

I know it wasn't meant to be funny, but this made me laugh out loud :D

The scroll direction was mostly due to the touch integration; people are use to using touch to go left to right and vice versa.

It would have been nice to be given an option though.

Mainstream support up to 2015, IIRC, with extended support as late as 2020. So, yes, Win7 will be around for a very long time. If it works for you, stick with it.

I personally feel that ONE OS for desktop PC's and touch screen tablets was a mistake. I doubt touch screens will ever replace the mouse in PC's. The whole swiping thing and hot corners with a mouse just isn't as efficient as right click/left click. Makes sense on a tablet but not on a PC. They should have made two versions of Windows 8 in the beginning.

Or they should have kept the interactions separate more than they did.

Touch screen laptops and monitors will become more common but people are still going to keep using a mouse for many interactions.

It just means you can call Microsoft direct for product support. I wonder if most people even do that nowadays. Even beyond 2020, Win7 will work indefinitely.

Up until very recently, my aunt had a computer running Windows 95. Was slow, but it did everything she ever needed it to do. And when she upgraded last year... It was a used computer running Windows 2000.

I was trying to support someone who was using Windows 8 to delete preferred wireless networks. Mind you, I've had never used windows 8 in my life, it was over the phone and all I had was a little clickable demo I found on another website. What a ******* pain, lol.
Yep - and that is the ONLY reason I installed that abortion on a computer I own. Trying to support it without first hand experience is a nightmare.

The interface doesn't play very well in a corporate environment that the users are used to either Windows XP or Windows 7.

I think the idea was fine, but there should've been an easy to find/use, toggle, which switches Windows into Tablet/Phone/TV mode or Desktop computer mode
Instead they effectively forced people to use a tablet type OS on desktop computers, they must've known it wasn't going to go down well, otherwise they wouldn't have been selling the Pro version for $30 lol
