XF 2.1 Who or what are guests?

I'm new to all of this.
I naturally assumed that guests were poeple looking at you site to see what is happening before they joon as members.
I have also heard that they might be Google Spiders etc (how many)
And I have alos heard that they may be spyware or malware sites etc?
Any comments?

Guests are everyone, or thing, visiting your site that is not logged in, or recognised as a known robot.

I just noticed that on one of the forums I manage (2.1.7) there are no tabs at https://xenforo.com/community/online/

Is there a setting or permission I have missed there?

They should be there unless you have removed them from the template or an add-on has removed them.

They are there. It's just that the current styling for links on that style has the tabs faded into the header:

No. They are still shown as logged in members but only admins (and perhaps moderators) can see that they're online.

Other way around.

Moderators with the bypass privacy permission can see them, or any account with that specific permission.

Remember that in XF administrators have enhanced permissions for the back end (ACP), moderators have enhanced permissions for the front end.

A member can be neither, one or the other, or both, but administrators != moderators.

OK, wrapping head around this …

User sets privacy to hide online status. Moderator with bypass privacy permission sees them as logged in. Admin who doesn’t have moderator role doesn’t see them.

Do I have that right @Brogan ?

If the administrator account does not have the bypass privacy permission, they won't be able to see hidden logged in member.
