Who are great Server Hosts?

I'm Currently using DreamHost.com was curious what everyone else is using and how much? I currently pay 10$ a month, but service seems slow. Would like to hear the thoughts of what other people use.

It depends;
  • managed or unmanaged?
  • With or without a pay-for control panel of some sort (cPannel, etc)
Linode or Digital Ocean have very good starting offerings if you can handle a bare bones unmanaged server.

Well theres also the business I run, which can be found in my signature. We provide free hourly backups up to two weeks int he past and deal with many xF customers.

Theres also Linode.com or DigitalOcean.com

I like having a Cpanel that is easy to navigate, that's a huge plus.

I'll check those you guys posted about. Thank you!

Our new site for 2015 will be live on Monday (feel free to PM me now too if you like). We specialize in xenForo. All our servers offer cPanel, Litespeed, PerconaSQL, hourly R1Soft backups and much more. We have several communities that I know have moved from DreamHost to us as I did their free cPanel transfers :) We host many communities from just a few threads to communities with over 4 million posts.

The price is generally right for shared hosting...$5-10 per month. VPS is another option, but if you're used to cPanel, that's going to add another $10-15/mo. to the bill.

Never looked back since moving to Nimbus. I solely recommend them nowdays to anyone who asks me.

I recommend Host Blizzard (@Eased). They're very low cost (I currently pay $3.20/month) and are quite good quality, and offer outstanding support. I've never had any problems with them, or a reason to switch away from them.

Host is really going to be dependant on a few different things such as, size of site, amount of traffic, experience with hosting panels/ setting up servers etc. For the not so technically your going to want to jump to shared hosting, only because everything is maintained for you for the cost, plus usually available in a control panel. But at the cost, your sharing your resources with many other users, so if your set on maintaining everything through a CP like cpanel, your going to have to spend a lot of money on licensing or find a provider who can rent you servers with the license(which others have stated, it's usually about 15 bucks at least a month). Alternatively, there are many free control panels that work just as good with a little knowledge such as webmin or vestacp.

As for great providers, always have to recommend ramnode.com for VPS. Can't go wrong with their performance.

What's your site? Would help to suggest services providers to best fit your needs. Also be wary of the hosts that claim to be xenForo hosting specialist but only charge $5.00/mo and can't even give you 10 xenForo powered sites they host. Popular choices around here include myself, MattW, URL Jet and Nimbus.

Two that I would go with, with no hesitation would be either MattW or Mike Edge. Both are good guys and knowledgeable.

I thought about getting into the hosting biz for a bit... but decided that would be like taking up self flagellation. I don't need those headaches - I'll let others have 'em .

Another vote for MattW.. Hes been working with us over the last cpl days on a cpl different projects and he hit it out of the park both times.. I have no doubt his servers are rock solid..

I would actually be worried about a host that just gives that sort of info out without first asking each of the 10 sites. I personally could care less, but I know many clients would care. Its not a good business practice. Though I am sure a major host would have a few up their sleeve that they already asked permission.

Was exactly my point :D If you don't have references, your not big enough yet to claim your a specialist in the niche, nor have many clients in that niche. I'd say at least 1 out of every 3 of my clients tell me to use them as a reference if ever needed. :D
