Which server would you choose?

Hi,
I'm having a little trouble making a decision between these two dedicated servers. I'm currently on the 6 core machine that seems to work fine for me for the most part. I used to have the 12 core machine at one time and liked it a lot, but it was more expensive at the time than it is below because it had a bunch of add on services that raised the cost too high. But the 12 core presents itself now for just $40 more. I'm trying to get the best bang for the buck. Which one would you choose considering the specs and price? I'm a little confused about the 6 core having a higher speed as compared to the 12 core. I'm not sure which one would make my site faster or if they would be comparable? I'm hoping someone knowledgeable on servers can give me an idea on which one is better? Thank you.

Intel Xeon E5-1650 v3 3500MHz 1CPU 6cores 31.3GB RAM 220GB SSD RAID1

or...

Intel Dual Xeon E5-2620 v3 2600MHz 2CPU 12cores 31.3GB RAM 452GB SSD RAID1

Depends on what you want to do with it. For a single site, it's probably, as @Brent W said, overkill.
Now, if you were going to put something like VMWare or ProxMox on it and set up your own VPS instances, I'd lean towards the second one.... but with RAID 1 you won't get the performance that a RAID 10 setup would... and even then you are still in overkill range if it's only for one site. I seriously doubt you are even straining the server you have now. A DO 4-8GB VPS would probably suffice and be much cheaper. A 4GB VPS is only $20 and the 8GB is $40. If you find those are to small you can always bump the VPS up easily and add block storage to them.

As was already said, both appear to be extreme overkill for your site. That said, CPU is almost never the limiting factor in a hosting setup. It is almost always Disk I/O. You could host hundreds of normal websites on either of those processors, and not come anywhere close to maxing out the processors.

For the extra $40/mo., you could likely get a couple more drives on the 1650 and run a RAID 10 array. That is going to be your biggest performance increase.

Having 24 cores, when I doubt even 1 of your current cores is anywhere close to being maxed out, is just silly, IMO.

If you're buying it not renting it get the 3500 add more storage later on! ;)

Thank you everyone for your opinions and thoughts. They have definitely given me something to think about. I will be getting together to discuss this further with my hosting provider. :-)

God bless. :-)
