Which add-ons for a new forum

I too plan to make the switch from VB over to Xeneforo.
What are some of the best add-ons I should look at adding?

-Resource Manager (do I need this? does it just manage files, is that not built into Xenforo?)
- Post Ratings
- Gallery Mode
- XenPorta

What else should I think about?

Resource Manager, yep, just manages files. If your community members need to share and download various types of resources then it's great. If not, you don't need it. It's not built in, it's an additional cost, but it is developed by the XenForo devs.

Post Ratings is great if you want more than just the "Like" button. You can have various others either positive, negative or neutral. They can be whatever you like.

As for a Gallery there's many options. The two most recent, actively developed Gallery add-ons are "Xen Media Gallery" developed by me (http://xenforo.com/community/resources/xen-media-gallery.1750/), and "Xen Gallery" developed by sonnb (http://xenforo.com/community/resources/sonnb-xengallery.2076/).

Xen Porta provides a front page and has been popular for some time. There are some other Portal add-ons and various add-ons and guides that will help you set up a home page. Search the Resource Manager for "portal".

Here's my Essential list but it gives you a good indicator

@Chris Deeming - Notifications
@Syndol - Bookmarks
@Luke Foreman - Post Ratings
@Dismounted - Xenmood
@bobster65 - Showcase
@Jake Bunce - Nodes as Tabs

There are two gallery's of choice which are both exceptionally well built by respectable developers. One built @Chris Deeming & the other @sonnb

  1. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/xen-media-gallery.1750/
  2. http://xenforo.com/community/resources/sonnb-xengallery.2076/

Other developer add-ons I recommend you look at are add-ons by @ExtraLicense @borbole @Waindigo (i'm sure there are others) but off the top of my head you'll be taken well care of by those and those I listed above. :)
