Where to Start?

I use MyBB for my forum right now, and am planning on a transition depending on what my partner says + funding.

It's a tough choice and I considered xenforo when I started, but I've been reevaluating what a forum should be, a bulletin board or a bulletin board covered up with layers of useless junk and features (what some forums do and where I got the idea from).

I have experience with making stuff for mybb, the reason I went with it was how easy it is to work with. XenForo confuses me with listeners and all of that stuff, where is a good place to start with development? I'll probably start with making plugins locally, and then transferring my board over.
