XF 1.2 What is "Prevent template modifications from being automatically applied"?

When editing a template. I saw this checkbox What exactly does it mean?

New XenForo versions mean new code in some templates. Checking that box will make it so the updated coded isn't automatically added into said templates.

What Amaury said is incorrect. If you have a modified template and new code from XenForo is added into the template, the system will attempt to merge it automatically. If it can't, it will mark the template as outdated.

That setting will prevent add-ons from applying template modifications using the built in system to share template edits.

Isn't that what I basically said? I may have worded it wrong.

No. XenForo code will be added regardless of that setting, unless there is a merge conflict.

Oh, I get it. Okay. Native XenForo code will be applied regardless if that's checked or not, just not code from resources.
