I understand that it is used for Push notifications.
However, as far as I understand it, GMP is a library that provides a kind of bigint type. How does XenForo use it under the hood? And why is it used for push notifications only?

It's used by the push notifications library that we use. I suspect it is used in the notification encryption process.
