What Hosting do you use?

KnownHost, I've switched through so many hosts and now because of Xenforo I ended up with KnownHost. Never ever knew a host could be this great. I honestly have zero complaints and would never want to switch.

Linode.com offers some of the best priced VPS hosting out there. Their HOW-TO guides and support are top-notch, too.

Linode bills by the hour, and is a true, worldwide cloud hoster of the first order. They have regions on multiple continents.

Pricing is here: https://www.linode.com/pricing

You get your choice of Linux distribution. Their documentation is stellar: https://www.linode.com/docs/

I am using this package:
$40/mo ($.06/hr)

8 GB RAM
4 CPU Cores
160 GB SSD Storage
5 TB Transfer
40 Gbps Network In
5000 Mbps Network Out

what additional responsibilities did you have to take on due to not having managed hosting?

You are basically responsible for everything - setting up the host (VM), updating and patching the operating system and other key software (database, php, forum software, add-ons such as Java, Elasticsearch, ImageMagick, etc.). It's more work, and it's easy to mess things up if you don't know what you are doing.

Which is why Linode's setup and maintenance instructions are so great.

Seems it's only cheap if you commit to 3 years. But they are practically in my backyard. Maybe I'll go right over and see them one day.

Not all the time. I pay $19.99 a month instead of $99. Depends when you buy.

So if I would save $40 per month by switching, and my time is worth $40, would it be worth it?

For someone totally new to CLI, play around with it for a week whilst learning the security essentials. Then, take 2-3 hours setting it up, test it and make it your production server. From there, it takes no time at all to "manage" your own server. I login twice a week to run yum update and that's it, nothing else to do unless I receive an email telling me something went wrong.

Also, buy a $10 vps ($6 w/ coupon) from Backupsy as well and rsync files/db to it in case of disaster.

Hetzner. Don't think anyone can beat them for unmanaged. Probably the best EU company. (Prices shown are without VAT though)

And if you need more disk space, you pay extra 4€/100GB. You can scale up your storage with any plan however you want (0.4€/10GB).
