That is true!Managed isn't necessary. Read a few guides on how to secure a new server and keep it updated. You'll be stuck on managed forever unless you just take the plunge.
Seems it's only cheap if you commit to 3 years. But they are practically in my backyard. Maybe I'll go right over and see them one day.Wow that is very cheap for what you are getting. Shame they are not managed :/
Yep, I use knownhost cloud hosting. For an extra 40-50 dollars per month to have some managed support it's totally worth it.I use https://www.knownhost.com/managed-vps.html

what additional responsibilities did you have to take on due to not having managed hosting?Linode bills by the hour, and is a true, worldwide cloud hoster of the first order. They have regions on multiple continents.

So if I would save $40 per month by switching, and my time is worth $40, would it be worth it?You are basically responsible for everything - setting up the host (VM), updating and patching the operating system and other key software (database, php, forum software, add-ons such as Java, Elasticsearch, ImageMagick, etc.). It's more work, and it's easy to mess things up if you don't know what you are doing.
Which is why Linode's setup and maintenance instructions are so great.
