Let's say I delete a post from Michael. Later in the thread, a user quotes Michael. Does that link break? Does it get fixed when threads are rebuilt?

The content remains - only those with the permission to view deleted posts will be able to use the link.

For all others they will receive an error.

Oh, that's not good for me. I've been cleaning up old posts and in some cases people have likely quoted those posts. This will create a new round of 404s that I'll have to tackle.

It'll actually be 403 rather than 404 if it has been soft deleted.

If you do not have permissions to view the deleted post then it will redirect you to the login screen.

If you have permanently deleted it, then it will return a 404 response... but, then, that's expected when the content no longer exists.
