XF 1.2 What does the Facebook "like" count refer to?

I note on the home page of my forum that there are 655 Facebook "likes," but we don't have nearly that many followers.

What does this "like" count signify, anyway, and how is the count incremented?

It relates to how many unique visitors with a Facebook account clicked on the FB Like on the forum index.

They don't need to be members of the forum to do so.

Interesting. Thanks. So I guess I better leave that there. Someone elsewhere here had suggested removing that block in order to maximize front page load times.
