One of my favourite bands of all time (which is surprising, seeing I never even heard of them prior to 2007) is Scottish band Runrig. I blame the lack of knowing them on being Dutch, and them being relatively unknown in Holland. I first heard of them right before moving to Denmark, and to my delight, they are huge here.
In 2007, the missus and me attended a bunch of concerts by legendary bands, including Level 42, Genesis, Toto, and the Police. However, all of them were easily dwarfed by Runrig. The concert had been sold out for months, but we ended up being lucky enough to score some tickets a week before the gig. Ever since, we've been trying to see them whenever they play somewhere closeby either hre or my parents (who live close to the German border, and Runrig is as big in Germany as they are in Denmark.
They are fantastic musicians, their music is actually about something, rather than the all too common "yo, I waz chillin wiz mah homies 2day", and their live concerts are so energy-filled that even my mother (whom we once dragged along, kicking and screaming) liked the concert. Other than that, the guys are truly nice blokes. We had the priviledge of meeting them a few times in a meet and greet, and they really take their time to connect to their fans.
Here's some of my favourites.
Big Sky - Live at Stirling Castle. Absolutely fantastic. One of their best live-songs, and luckily they added it to their live-set again.
In Scandinavia - Album version
Medley of Every River, Only the Brave, A Dance called America and Pride of the Summer (aka Beat the Drum) (also from the 2003 Stirling gig)
Loch Lomond (With Donny Munroe as the lead singer. He left the band to persue a political career, and was replaced with Canadian Bruce Gethro in 1997)
Hearts of Olden Glory (Stirling again)
"The colours of Scotland leave you young inside. There must be a place under the sun, where hearts of olden glory grow young". Lyrics that give me goosebumps every time I hear them.
