VPS Size?

Hello!

I currently use Plesk to manage a forum, my renewal for Plesk is due in around 6 months and I'm wanting to drop Plesk in favor of just using the command line. I currently use a 1GB VPS with Plesk I'm wondering if I'll be able to get away with 512MB? Or would that be pushing it? I plan to install the below...

  • Apache
  • MySQL
  • PHP
  • Fail2Ban
  • LetsEncrypt
  • Duplicity
  • IPTables
That should be everything, do you think I'd be able to get away with 512MB? The forum itself isn't really booming with traffic.

You might be able to get away with that much. I would use Centmin Mod since you are wanting to go command line anyways. It's made by a member here @eva2000 and runs very very efficiently. I've tagged him so he can tell you more about it. I use it myself and am slowly learning how to do things that way.

Ram is so cheap, is your budget like $2 a month? You get a decent KVM w/ 2gb for around $7 a month.
Are you overpaying for Plesk too? I pay 7 euro per quarter.
Anyway, CentminMod is nice.

Well practice on test vps is best way just bookmark and read at least the following:
But 512MB ram might depend on linux distro used too, CentOS uses more minimum memory than say Ubuntu/Debian though for Xenforo you depends on size of your forum too. You'll definitely be more able to use 512MB VPS with Nginx compared to memory hogging Apache web server.

Practise on test VPS first.

My Xenforo forum runs on my own Centmin Mod LEMP stack (123.09beta01 version) https://community.centminmod.com/ :) and it's Forum section https://community.centminmod.com/forums/forum-software-usage.34/

or find nice US$25/yr deals for 2GB OpenVZ with 50GB SSD sometimes https://community.centminmod.com/threads/hostus-us-holiday-deals-2gb-openvz-vps-25-yr.9874/ - shame deal is over but man these servers are fast. Using one for testing Xenforo Dev preview releases on Centmin Mod LEMP stacks https://community.centminmod.com/posts/45274/

I'm paying around £15 a month for a 1GB VPS, backups, 20GB block storage plus £50 a year for Plesk. Where are you finding it for 7 euros per quarter?

I found these deals for hostus.us :http://domainhostcoupon.com/stores/hostus-us?_c=7012
Chose the $35/yr deal

Going to give your centmin a try. ;) Going to be a BIG learning curve as I don't normally use the ssh command. Jumping in with both feet....lol

Thanks @eva2000

I was looking at Dreamhost, but they want an extra $15 month for the MySQL to be run on a dedicated server! Isn't that kind of steep?

Supercharge your MySQL database

Enhance the performance of any VPS plan by enabling MySQL VPS during checkout. This optional add-on service gives your site's database its own isolated server. Dedicated resources mean quicker page loads -- and happier users! Get started with a one-week free trial.

Centmin is nice for inexperienced users looking to use a VPS but I can't say it fits every scenario. It seems to rely on the prospect that every setup and server is the same and the way you install things (some are in non-standard directories from what I recall) is annoying to use for sysadmins.

In my case, I tried it in early 2016. After needing to customise a lot more of the installation, I found it easier and less worrying to just start from scratch and not use centmin at all.

I'd suppose for the majority of installations it would do fine, though.

Centmin Mod ain't like any other LEMP stack as it has features no other LEMP stack has out of the box https://community.centminmod.com/posts/46152/ :)
