VerticalScope Inc Headed toward Bankruptcy?

That's like asking my mechanic to do my brakes out of passion because he loves working on cars.
Not really.

That analogy doesn’t quite work. He’s not being asked to do unpaid work for someone - it's about deciding whether to invest time into building a product without any validation or guaranteed demand. That’s a business risk, not a matter of passion or free work.

If that makes sense? I dunno. :ROFLMAO:

Why not just do it out of passion? Who cares if you get 10 or 100 sales? Do it because you think it makes sense.
Development and testing are time prohibitive, and if he were to release it he is more likely to get better funding with upfront investment than he is to sell it purely as an add-on where it could take years to make an actual return.

One thing I don't understand is this obsession with systems where users vote on the quality of discussions. No forum has as many users as Reddit. So the number of votes cast will naturally be small, and therefore the “algorithm” won't work well.

On the most popular forums, users often want to follow almost all of the discussions posted recently, or just a few of them.

In this add-on specifically, the upvote/downvote is powered by native reactions.

Considering that some first posts don't have a lot of reactions, I added an aggregation setting to count all reactions toward the first post's reaction score for ranking purposes.

Okay, now it makes sense, at least in part. It’s worth noting that aggregating all the reactions could serve as a “general barometer of activity.”

I’ll say it again: in my opinion, there isn’t much appeal for this type of feature because we all (with very few exceptions) have a user base that’s too small to benefit from this kind of implementation.

Every time I’ve introduced a homepage, users have complained and wanted the usual list of sections.

The only thing we’ve managed to get users to accept over the years is a content feed that embeds the forum list as a tab—the idea is taken from ThemeHouse’s Feeds (even though that add-on has bugs and works poorly) and was partially recreated by Painbaker with Content Feeds.

Simply presenting users with the latest discussions, latest posts, and latest activity is often more than enough. Well, that’s just my opinion. But I’ve been managing forums of varying sizes for over 10 years, and I’ve never found the user base or the level of engagement (meaning the habit of voting and reacting to content) needed to handle this kind of setup.
