It's perhaps worth noting that it's not India or China that is the problem. Both countries have very decent coders. As the old devs have experienced, it's the management. They want both cheap labor and fast delivery. The results should surprise no one.
vb5 beta released, and...

I was not hired to work on vB5. 
I was hired to work on vB4, after the rest of the team (except Freddie) moved to vB5.
Freddie & I worked on vB4.1.5 initially, and then vB 4.1.7 to vB 4.1.12, & finally vB 4.2.0.
Neither of us worked on [or even saw] vB5 until the end of May (after we finished with vB 4.2.0).
Danco also joined the team on vB4 initially, and moved to vB5 after 4.1.12 was released.
Since then I have done bits of vB5 bug fixing, and some work on the hooks and extensions areas.
However, I spend a lot of my time working on [and managing] the VBC and VBG backend & sales systems.
Freddie also moved onto vB5 bug fixing, and is now heavily involved in investigating and fixing performance issues.

So no one is really manning (finishing up) vBulletin 4 now that vBulletin 5 is released?
I mean the outsourcing of coding to China.
As Jake mentioned, some of the template conversions were outsourced to an Indian company, with limited success by all accounts.
But is it reasonable to infer or assume that while Chinese programmers were never hired nor was work ever outsourced to China, there were discussions of outsourcing to China?

Didn't say you were, what I was trying to say was clearly the people who WERE involved in VB5's creation, were no where near your level of expertise.
Given the state of VB5 in it's "beta" condition, it just reeks of outsourcing.
It's almost like they've hired a bunch of amateurs to write the foundation and left the professionals to patch up, rewrite or fix the mistakes they've made.

Update:
The editor doesn't have a button to help wrapping [I.M.G] tags around image URLs as people expect.
If you have the URL in the clipboard (which you would) you can use [Upload] in the Images Tab to upload it. Then a thumbnail link appears to your image.
Worse for me though, you can't embed the uploaded image into the post in full size.

Very true. I was on a site that switched and many old time users bailed out complaining their cheese had been moved. They complained about the better look even as though dim 50's look was a badge of honor in 21st century.
On another site that moved from vB to IPB and there was little noticeable difference. In that case the site managers didn't even tell the users they were switching and just did it, changes were so minimal few even noticed.
Upgrading the software, changing the user interface is always problematic.

It's so true. That's why when switching to another forum software you need to be absolutely sure that you made the right choice for switching. Either way, you'll have die-heard users complaining, and you better hope to have the support of the majority of your community.

I checked out the latest alpha beta.
It is currently recognizable as forum software. (took quite an overhaul of things to accomplish that).
I think I like the Tag cloud ... and this screen to select more Tags.
Anyone know if vBulletin will release a Titles addon so titles show on the forum home ? (Untitled)

I see no reason to buy a license at this time. I'm waiting to see how it develops.
