XF 2.1 User group promotions / permissions

Say I create a "paid" user group and create a user upgrade that promotes paid members to the "paid" user group. The paid user group has expanded signature permissions including images, links, extra length, etc. A member pays for the promoted account and edits his/her signature to take advantage of these expanded options. The user then cancels the subscription / doesn't renew and XF removes the "paid" user group for the member in a month or so. What happens to the signature when this happens?

The signature remains as is as the lower permissions are not retroactively applied.

You would have to manually remove it.

OK. I assume that if the user attempted to edit the signature after the demotion, it would enforce the restrictions in order to save a new signature, but the user could just cancel the edit and keep the old sig?
