There is no addional load to server. The client only request to your server when new data arrived not interval.

It caused high pressure and consumed site resources
So I removed it

Push is great. but their pricing tier is a small concern (Concurrent connections)

Have you considered using Ably.io too? They are a lot cheaper and turning all threads into a huge chatroom is possible. You are onto something good.

I'm probably being stupid but why does it need a third party for this? If it's getting data from your own server?

Does this mean it won't be resource intensive?

Xen is a good developer from the plugins I've used, but his plugin for the same thing (https://xenforo.com/community/resources/live-content.6381/) lots say causes issues so I'd worry about the same here
