Implemented Thread Tagging

This suggestion has been implemented. Votes are no longer accepted.
Hello,
Can we have an option for TAGGING, just like what facebook have. For example, in facebook when you upload a pic, or post some links and you want your friend to see it, you tag him/her.
So similarly, when we create a topic, we should have an option to tag all our freinds(ppl we follow) or individual. And whoever get tagged, will get alert notification.

Also, user should have an option to prevent everyone to tag him/her.

AND! It may go some way to cure the dreaded repeat topic syndrome...

It would be nice to cure improve this.

But I think Forums are always going to be like that. Unless, the structure of forums and posting changed.

Repeat Topic Syndrome is caused by many things.

Newbies and Regular members have trouble finding the information they need. Forum Searching needs improving.
People are lazy
Sites need Documents and Pages ... not just Posts (think XenCarta).
Sites wanting more structure might force New Posts to be tagged !

One thing is for sure though: Tag clouds are a great way to make a page look cluttered as hell, which is something I think the developers of Xenforo are trying desperately to avoid.

I completely agree:

tag cloud vb.webp

Can somebody explain to me what the benefit is for me (and my members) to see what are the most searched tags (on regardless which platform?) ?! I just don't get it. WHY o WHY do I need to know (and SEE all the time... because this obtrusive Tag Cloud -see screenshot- can't be missed can it?!) that VBULLETIN and IMPEX and BLOG are the most searched tags?!! I.DO.NOT.CARE.

.

I am in the Search area of a forum platform to search for stuff I, yes I need. I don't care if other people searched for vBulletin, Impex, Blog or whatever they searched for: it has nothing to do with me and my specific search needs, does it?! I never ever clicked on any Search Cloud.

Is it beneficial for SEO or something (I don't have a clue about stuff like that), because I surely can't see the functional benefits (of a Tag Search Cloud).

And please provide an importer for existing tags :) And a way to configure on a per-node basis which tag goes where, preferably in a hierarchical manner (As in Node 1.1.1 will feature tags allowed for 1.1 and 1, unless specifically disabled).

What you call Topic Tagging ... sounds like Topic Alerting.
You are alerting a person to a particular topic.
You can "Share this Page" with your Facebook friends.

What you want is to Share a page with another Forum member.
You can do this now by using a Conversation - but it's relatively inconvenient.

I think it could be a good thing.
It would probaby be near the current Tweet / Recommend area.
How essential is this ? Hard to say.

It also might make things too easy for people to share stuff with their friends.
I don't think XF has a Friends list ... and that would probably be needed to make the sharing quick.

Interesting idea... but you have to be careful this will not feel as annoying to some people. You're basically deciding what Alerts they should receive for content. So core feature? I'm not convinced. But there is something to think about here.

Gosh. That sounds hard.
Good idea though.

I wonder if a hashtag system/traditional tagging system hybrid might be better.

I invision the ability to type #groups in a post, or status update and have that #groups automatically link to the content tagged with "groups". I wonder how would this sytem work on a technical level. But I imagine that if you make it easier to interact with tags, they'll be used more often.

Maybe an option for everyone to prevent him/herself being tagged .....

I'm just looking for a tagging system that can be assigned to different usergroup rights categories such as administrators, moderators, etc.
Some of the posts in my forum are truly gold nuggets regarding the overall topic and we desperately need a way to tag them as such.

So... has anybody actually produced a tagging system for XenForo, or is everybody still just talking about it?
I'd appreciate links to tagging systems actually or nearly-actually available for XF. Thanks!

BTW I asked TPB/XF about when Tags and they gave a very coy answer of "some time in the future".

Just for comparison I asked their true main competitor IPB (or at least one of their main competitors) and immediately received an email saying unequivocally that Tags will be in IPB version 3.2, AND they provided a link to a blog where they are discussing specifically what features they are planning to add and when.

What price loyalty to XF?

Still loyal, for now, but getting antsy about the chronic vagueness when we all have business plans to refine and implement.

Except 3.2 is almost right near release in some form (betas/previews) where XF isn't in a position just yet to explain how and what form tags may show up, nor is it true to assume they're working on it right now or working on other features that people are waiting for.
