The 'New' iPad (Third Generation)

I didn't have the first iPad, and since I got an iPad 2, I actually have not turned on my laptop a single time. But going from my iPhone 4 to the iPad, the iPhone's "retina" display makes my iPad's look like poo (even though it's in fact a pretty good display). I'd say it's safe to say that the retina screen alone on the iPad 3 will make it hugely popular.

I'm surprised that the human eye can pick that up - or is it the placebo effect?
I remember reading about HD TV's - that under a certain size, the idea of the 1080 was ridiculous.

It very well might be that certain people have the gift of noticing the diff - just like some people can pick up fine audio, but most cannot. This is a chart for bigger TV's, but you can see what I am getting at. The same thing goes for Audio - how many people do you think can really tell the diff between MP3 encoded at 192 and at 320?

I ordered the third generation iPad and if I like it, I'll keep it. I hope it works well with a bluetooth keyboard as text production is also part of my daily work.

My wife wanted a new laptop but since she is an iphone user I talked her into trying an ipad with a bluetooth keyboard. It's a keeper for her!
(I saved some money too!)

She does almost no work on hers...that is, does not use graphic programs, etc. so the idea that her phone and her laptop can use the same OS works out well.

Where do you guys order ipad accessories?
Is there any better third-party accessories that are better and cheaper than those offered on Apple website?
Smart cover, bluetooth keyboard, etc

for the 4G model, if your area doesn't have 4G yet, isn't better to just get 3G and save money?
I wouldn't. I think it's better to buy a device that supports future technologies, so that when your area eventually does get 4G, you're ready.

I've been an apple fan since 1984, but I still have an iphone 3G (yes!) and keep my desktops for 5+ years.
Been around since the mid 80s too but went the Android route.
I've been questioning the need for a tablet for myself. When I travel my Powerbook is just fine. My original Droid still does what I need.
The main reason not even considering a tablet was an additional data plan.
But now that I've rooted my Droid and made it a wi-fi hotspot, I'm now succumbed to peer pressure and marketing.
Hell, I didn't even by a iPod. :)

As I have not already got an iPad I thought this one I will go for, I've been wanting one since November last year but managed to hold myself back from buying one. Pre-ordered and paid for, just need to wait until 16th when UPS delivers it :(

I talked to a friend who works in the entertainment industry and they are a bit frustrated that Apple chose to go 2048x1536 instead of the 1920x1080. Now this means all the movies we will see have to be somewhat upscaled

Let's see... go with a resolution that makes the old resolution exactly divisible (it was doubled in both directions) so that 150,000 existing iPad apps look fine, or go with an arbitrary resolution so movies fit exactly in it? And if you went that route, either the pixels would need to be lopsided or the entire iPad would need to be squished into a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Think about how retarded an iPad would be at a 16:9... stretched all super-wide. Less useful for most everything and makes all the existing apps not look right, but at least it doesn't waste any pixels if you decide to watch a HD movie on it. :)

Maybe your friend could complain to magazine and newspapers to switch to a 16:9 aspect ratio for their publications too so that way they don't need to crop images from the movie if the picture is shown in the publication. :)

Surely there is an option to watch video in the native resolution?
I would be very surprised if there isn't.

As pointed out above though, the iPad is geared towards their app store which is extremely lucrative and profitable for them. The end user will always come second when up against that.

I don't know what iCloud is. I just know I won't buy something that lacks a basic function that even the cheapest or expensive netbooks, laptops and videogaming systems have: the usb port.

You can even buy it as a basic enclosure so you can add in your own drive.
With hyperdrive you can edit data directly on the drive. You cant copy stuff from the ipad to the drive though, the data has to already be on the drive - I think this is an OS restriction on the ipad2.

Hope this helps
