The demise of Reddit is happening right now. Thoughts?

Straight people aren't a minority. All of society has been honoring straight people for most of history.
But how is that relevant to these various big-tech outlets? My point here has nothing to do with what is minority, or not minority. The point is how is this stuff relevant to be forced down people’s throats in areas where it’s not appropriate? We can celebrate and honor minorities any day under the sun in places where it’s relevant and appropriate.

The reason why I brought up the military - a certain day this month (June 6th) was the anniversary of an invasion that not only secured the defense of the United States, but majority of Europe. It secured the freedom we all have to even think about the idea of “Pride month” and celebrating various minorities. Yet these big-tech companies will never be seen celebrating our nations military, let alone of the D-Day for an entire month. Why is that?

Secondly, you brought up in the earlier post - you would rather we not discuss this stuff here at XenForo as it could be labeled as off topic or not relevant to the discussion. Well, that is the entire point I am trying to make here in the first place! 😂 So essentially you now see why people also get ticked when this stuff is all over other outlets and boards of discussion where it really isn’t even appropriate to discuss! So as you questioned earlier, I hope you now see why this stuff frustrates people. Including yourself.

I still think people need to take a deep breath and not get triggered by EVERYTHING.
I understand we can all be rational, and I try to see both sides with things. I just wanted to explain why people are getting tired of how Reddit and other big-tech outlets do things 🤷🏼‍♂️ I am all for honoring anything someone wants to honor. But just keep it appropriate and on topic with the actual user base that is visiting the subreddit, board, forum ect.

When a kid is wanting to read about “Animal Crossing”, he clicks on the subreddit to read about “Animal Crossing”. I guess that is what gets to me. And this is the stuff that will actually draw people back to proper old-school forums who don’t have lobbyist, investors, or are politically influenced.

There are still a few thousand formerly public subreddits that have gone dark in protest at the monetisation situation.
and here is a simple example... was looking to see if there was any way to get the mighty Twitter to use a GV number instead of my cell phone (I refuse to give him more data to sell to line his pockets with) and one of the links was to r/Android... and what do you find when you go there?

Also remind me why none of these spaces ever honor a month to military, or Heck… Straight people? When is any of that ever forced onto people? Just being real here. So yes - people are exhausted with these big-tech “woke” being forced down people’s necks in places it has no relevance in. Look, I totally understand honoring BLM or LGBQ in places where it makes sense (political subreddits, boards, discussion boards, dating boards ect). But the spaces where it is not appropriate or relevant, is what ends up ticking people off. That’s just the reality of how some people feel with Reddit.
I don’t know about you but I have a problem honouring an industry for whom a significant factor is teaching its employees how to kill people. I recognise that a military is necessary for defence, but that doesn’t mean I want to honour it, let alone glorify it.

As for straight people… the reason we don’t celebrate straight people or “Straight Pride” or whatever is because we aren't the minority. We already get all the societal advantages. We don’t need a celebration or reminder that we’re in the top position.

As for “where it makes sense”, please remember that these are people you’re talking about. People who are in the minority, who spend a lot of their lives fighting to be accepted, being taken seriously, with a huge amount of hate driven their way - and you want to reduce discussions about them to the corner. Might as well round them all up, ship them off to their own country and just pretend they don’t exist if you’re going to do that - and see what happens. The whole point is trying to show these people that they actually are welcome, and I can assure you they spend enough time being rejected that they can spot an insincere “support” or ”ally” a mile off.

I think the issue is more-so the "I'm going to shove my opinion in your face and smear it around" than the "live and let live". You don't see heterosexuals pushing for "special days". You don't see caucasians pushing for "special months". Hell, I haven't seen Asians pushing a "special month/week/day" for them... and I promise you in the 1800's they were as abused as bad, if not more so, than African Americans.. The simple fact is... we are humanity... we ALL need to be treated equally. Many realize that and go about their daily routines... but there are then some on BOTH ends of the spectrum that want to shove the crap in your face to try to push a point... and THAT is what many have issues with.
As an example... reparations... OK... no problem.. show me a currently living person that was directly impacted by slavery and I have no issues with giving them reparations... but sorry... just because your great-great (and maybe great) grandmother/grandfather was a "slave"... sorry... you aren't due anything.

Maybe instead of taking that racist and bigotry attitude in to reddit. It might be better to go ask an Indigenous person if they were affected by slavery.
Think you will find that being in your face smearing hate speech is where you're getting it wrong.

Well... considering that my ancestors were Native Americans - you know, those that were abused WELL before the slaves started coming in and well after they were "freed"... maybe I can ask myself?
This is a great example. Where is the month long of big-tech outlets changing logos, banners, emblems ect. For Native Americans?

🤦🏼‍♂️ Maybe if you looked a bit deeper into the actual reality of life, the freedoms we enjoy, and the sacrifices that some of our people and their families in our nations make in order for you to enjoy those said freedoms… you would then understand. Again, fundamentally, the entire reason why you even have a choice to celebrate the idea of Pride, BLM and all these other things that are suddenly blasted over big-tech outlets is ultimately because people sacrificed their lives for that freedom. Not only in the United States, but almost all of Europe as well. These “Western” luxuries of freedom of thought and choice would not exist if things went differently in WW2, let alone in current times if we were all speaking Russian, or Chinese at this point of history.

So this is very much so relevant and the reason I brought it up, was because as I said earlier… June 6, the anniversary of DDay (where some troops where forced to serve and die that day). Is an anniversary where you rarely see any outlet celebrate, change their banner for, or even mention. Yet you have all sorts of random big-tech outlets (including the example I gave of a children’s subreddit for the game Animal Crossing), making a huge deal posting things and changing their banner for LGBQT rainbow.

It just doesn’t click in my mind to, and tbh, it’s actually ticking more people off than I think anyone actually wants to admit. Also consider the reality that corporations push Pride month and that has nothing to do with the actual LGBT response. They do this because statistically a lot of gay men buy a lot.

Honestly, I feel there's no need for labels, especially online. we should just be who we are and love who we love without labels or needing to make it known to everyone all the time (ESPECIALLY ONLINE). Unless if it’s a dating forum or outlet. It's like straight people for example don't make being straight their entire personality. When being part of the queer community and taking flags and labels and making sure everyone knows what your sexuality and gender identity becomes your whole personality.. it's annoying, it's lame. We should be past this already, no one cares.. and of they do.. then don't worry about it.. yanno? Like just be around open minded people that relate to you. It's just a lot, to associate myself with LGBT+ community.. just the name of lgbtqia+ is like what the actual heck. I just hate labels so much, none of that crap matters. Be who you are, and do life like everyone else. Including discussing the freaking topic that your forum is originally focused on. Literally no one online at these places should even care about your gender, sexual preference ect… especially on a freakin animal crossing forum, or a site discussing web development. So don’t throw irrelevant things into the mix. That is what is frustrating people here with this stuff.

Xenforo with a Reddit mode/skin/theme feel maybe? :)
That’s what I’m saying. Honestly if someone custom tailors the “What’s new” page to be a much more dynamic and limitless scroll portal similar to how Reddit sets theirs up - I believe a lot of success could be seen just from that side of the forum stream.

One thing that IPS did right is work on their "whats new" flow of data... XF is really behind in that aspect.

One thing? There is nothing remotely close to IPS Pages on xenforo. It's behind on quite a few things. Not just upcoming weeks.
Pages are a totally different scenario. There are some add-ons (specifically by @Bob) that exceed what most can do with Pages...but for general use, IPS pages blows anything XF offers out of the water.
Please.. feel free to visit my site... IPS (unless you engaged a 3rd party developer) could not compete (4.3 days) with what my landing page is... and I'm only beginning with it.
I'm still bouncing between moving my "play" SMF site from it to either XF or back to IPS (which it was originally).... the biggest thing keeping me from IPS is the worry about how long they will continue to support the stand-alone script.
I was able to do a LOT more with Pages for less financial input than compared to XF and the necessary 3rd party add-ons.
Honestly.... one of the "best" things XF could do would be to start throwing money at @Bob to encourage him to "transfer" his add-ons over to them. Bob would get a fantastic paycheck (which he well deserves) and XF would get a crap-ton of high quality add-ons to move into the 1st party venue.

What you mean if Russia or China had won WW2?

Oh wait though, wasn’t the Soviet Union an ally? And unless I’ve forgotten history, China may have been very supporting to the allied forces.

Had the allies list surely it’s more likely we would have been speaking German.

Possibly getting off topic now or is the off topic forum I’ve forgotten.

No no no, when I mentioned Russia and China - I meant in current day. Germany back in the 40s was very much so against LGBQT. And in current day, the CCP and Kremlin is the same. We are very blessed to have the freedom of government and luxuries that still exist in our current modern day timeframe (regardless if people agree with these movements or not) what matters is the freedom of expression exists because of the wars fought on our behalf. My point was to not take it for granted whether it’s 1940 or 2023. There’s been so many conflicts within this span of life that very much so deserve honoring our sacrifices of troops and the families involved with said service members.

🙃 wow this thread has gone off the rails.

https://edib.harvard.edu/heritage-months

These are the heritage months that are usually nationally recognized and celebrated; there is also months for Irish-American and Italian-American, so there is some representation for of white ancestry 🙃.

May is also National Military Appreciation Month (https://www.ausa.org/texas-capital-...may-2023-national-military-appreciation-month), a lot of other days: https://www.operationwearehere.com/significantdaysobservances.html

This weird argument that "Advocacy is not needed in Animal Crossing Reddit!"... Does it really matter where people advocate for themselves if it harms no one? It's a weird dynamic where someone can support freedom of speech, and then complain that someone practices their freedom of speech. If a subreddit allows certain discussions (and some have rules against politics or political adjacent discussions, such as /r/Disney, however they've been more lenient with recent issues), what does it matter to anyone who doesn't want to read it. That's the amazing thing about 3rd party plugins or apps, they have actual good filter tools so you can filter content or people you don't want to see much better (and way better than ignoring on XenForo).

This isn't the first time a company has changed its current policy. A little early to talk about the end of Reddit. That social networks in general are heading towards a decline, this is a belief that has been buzzing in my head for quite a while. Not a thing limited to Reddit.
Protests are useless. If you don't like Reddit's politics, build another Reddit.
