How do i set up a test site? So it's clear, if i simply want to set up a test site on my server:

  • Upload Xenforo files to server
  • Create a new database? or -(Will my VB3 database be used with Xenforo?)
  • How will I access the Xenforo forum once installed, my current site and URL are live running on VB.

Thanks,

Hence why I posted this:

If I understood this right then this should be second step:

"The first step is to install XenForo; refer to this section of the manual:http://xenforo.com/help/installation/"

First should be create database and back it up? Then install forum software? Being that you need the database information to install forum.

I believe that is the mistake i made the first time around.

Thanks.

@Brogan I am still confused and doing my full on install this weekend as long as my style is completed.
Please just clarify.

1. create database.
2. back up database (no content, members or forums at this point.)
3. Upload Xenforo file folder to server.
4. run the forum installer. (input database information when asked.)
5. set permissions, install add ons.
6. Import forum over from what ever forum software you have with the importer.

Thanks in advance - just want to get it right the second time around.

There is no point in doing 2 until you have installed the software in step 4.
At step 2 the database is completely blank - it has no tables or content at all.

Create the database.
Install the software.
Set it up as you want: permissions, styling, installing add-ons, etc.
Take a backup.

Then you can do your test import as many times as you like and just restore from the backup without having to reinstall and set everything up again.

Before import - should I delete the main category and forum that is automatically created upon install of Xenforo?

The benefit is more or less up to you. It makes redirects easier if you keep them, but if you don't care about a slightly 'more difficult' redirects, I see no benefit for keeping them.
