XF 1.2 Template Modification Method

I've used the TMS (by Guiltar) extensively. I believe there is now a way to do the same thing built into 1.2 XF. Is there any way to see how this "new thing" works or what it looks like prior to upgrading to 1.2?

You should use a test install to test it out, since it requires debug mode turned on.

Ouch, you mean debug mode is mandatory for template modification using the "new method"?

You don't need template modifications in 1.2, use the built in merge feature.

Its designed for add-on developers, and has been hidden with out debug mode (as are all other development tools) in the gold release:

But, as Brogan said, you don't need template modifications for most edits.

OK, I'm going to have to do some extra reading. I'll need to be clear on TM vs TMS (at least I've got the abbreviation correct now). Thanks for the links Brogan and King K. I expect I'll also need some die hard TMS fans to weigh in on how the two methods differ.

There are quite a few differences, but TM is a better solution (strictly because it's native) and the merging capabilities alleviate the headaches of past upgrades.
