TaigaChat - AJAX shoutbox

Not open for further replies.
Support for the internal search would be a lot more work than it's worth if you ask me (how often is something genuinely useful posted in a shoutbox anyway?),
Not in my Forum. The shoutbox is a key training area. It's not for just bs'ing. It's about learning a skill, and it's only open for posting to people who've committed to the training I offer. Being able to locate posts to the chat, once they've been transferred to a Forum post (or someplace that IS indexed by the Forum software), is mission critical. It can't just be blown off.

plus the search indexing load would increase dramatically on small forums where there are likely more daily shoutbox messages than posts (like mine).
In my system, posts are more frequent daily than are the chats. So your pattern likewise does not apply in my site's instance.
Search engines wouldn't be a problem though
Yep that's why I want the content where they AND my users can easily find it.
Thanks again for the discussion.
Best,
HydraulicJack

Hopefully such a feature can be disabled completely, and knowing DI it will be :)
I would have no use for archiving throwaway chat messages.
Yes by all means switchable. Like I posted, my chat content for the most part is not bs, it's part of the training dialogue, and needs to be archived and indexed. Now it does so automatically, once or twice per week.

In that case saving the day's shouts to a forum thread when the nightly cron runs might be the best approach. Are you still willing to make a donation for it?

Sure! I can show you the way it's done in vB 3.x - unfortunately the guy who built it doesn't seem to be available for porting it over. If you're willing to do so that'd be great. I would just give him one last chance to respond to my recent queries (he's been going through some personal challenges that have pulled him away from the vb.org community for a while, but he's showing signs of returning.

I won't dawdle though. If you're open to doing this I would certainly donate... If you are, I want to let him know there's someone willing to do the job and give him a final oppty to step up or not. We had a long working relationship so I owe him that courtesy, but I also do need to get on with the growth of my enterprise.

Thanks again VERY much, DkImm!

HJ

Added in 0.3.2 :)

Hopefully I've done in it in a way that suits, if not I'm happy to change it.

0.3.2 (30/01/2011):
  • Added archiving to thread feature
  • Added support for the 'threads' action (i.e. What's New page)
  • Fixed hardcoded 'Guest' text
  • Possibly fixed rare error when AJAX requests are interrupted

Awesome job, DI :)

One more suggestion: right now, when editing/deleting a shout, it redirects you to /taigachat/ (Or shoutbox, chatbox, or whatever url you use) when done. Seems a little useless though if you have the taigachat tab hidden in the first place, and you don't intend for people to even see that page. Any chance of an option to edit/delete messages without being redirected there when done (eg the popup just disappearing)?

As usual, just throwing about ideas. Love what you've done so far. :p

Decided against this in the end - it's more trouble than it's worth to have edited/deleted messages update instantly. Though I'm unable to reproduce it redirecting to /taigachat or whatever - by design it should redirect to the page you were previously on, using /taigachat or whatever route as a fallback.

Whoa, likey likey! I will definitely take a look. Thanks!

PS I really like having the edit on the fly (by Moderator only, and only one line at a time).
It's a small cache that holds up printing new lines while Moderator is editing that line, but THAT cache is only a few lines long so mod'r has to be quick about it, because if mod'r takes too long the line goes ahead and prints without the mod'r pressing return.
Given that very reasonable limit it lets chat moderator correct typos to improve search engine ranking AND for users to more completely locate as much relevant content as possible, without missing good stuff due to misspelling of keywords.

But... let's see what he's got to say.

Again, thanks VERY much!

Nice work again DI, although we won't be making use of that particular functionality.

Regarding BB Code buttons, I know it's been mentioned a few times but would a donation/payment make any difference as to whether you could implement them?
I don't mean full WYSIWYG functionality, just the ability to click on a button which would insert the code tags in the text entry field.
ACP configurable would be preferable as then I could choose from the default and custom BB Code I have added using KK's BBCM.

Or is it a tehnical limitation as to why it can't be done?

If anyone else is interested in adding BB CODE buttons, can you also confirm whether you would be willing to make a donation?

I was "able" to get this error message, anything useful?

Fatal error: Call to undefined method XFCP_Dark_TaigaChat_ControllerPublic_Index::actionIndex() in /home/*****/huoltovalikko.keskustelupalstat.com/library/Dark/TaigaChat/ControllerPublic/Index.php on line 7

Any idea what page that is happening on? Though regardless I can still workaround it

In that case I'll see what I can do. I take it BBCode and smiley buttons should only show up on the full/popup shoutbox?

I think that would be best as the sidebar view would probably be too narrow.
I don't use that though so others may have a different opinion.

This has now been added :)

0.4.0 (01/02/2011):
  • Added configurable BBCode and Smilies toolbar.
  • Fixed rare fatal error, mostly on pages that would otherwise 404 (introduced in 0.3.0).
  • Fixed alternative view header link not using the active route setting.

It actually fits in surprisingly well on the sidebar version, so I've made the default for it to be enabled on all views. However it is initially hidden on the alternative/forum list and sidebar views until you focus the message box, as it can be quite distracting otherwise.

Also a proper colour picker/dropdown is something for later - not really essential since named colours work.

Edit: Also updated the admin panel screenshot

Oh wow!
That is just suberb.

It looks even better than I imagined.

I haven't even had time to upgrade to 0.3.2 :D

I was about to but have seen this amazing version :D
Thanks Darkimmortal, one of my favorite addons.

  • Enabled in all views, including sidebar
I have this set but bbcode buttons are not showing on my sidebar, the full page is fine.

Have you tried clearing your cache? And I take it you did actually click in the message box? :P
